Personal opinion: alien isolation is freaking PHENOMENAL. And I love it. Also, I've played very few horror games, so ya know.

Now, your personal opinion on this subject:

You stole the words right out of my mouth. I also choose Alien Isolation, and I will always bang the drum for that underrated horror masterpiece when I can.

For second place, I’d say Silent Hill 2 or Dead Space.

Fatal Frame 2 and the Clock Tower series are also good. The early 2000’s were just a goldmine for horror games with Silent Hill and Resident Evil arguably at their peak.

I also haven't played many horror games, but even if I had I bet System Shock 2 would still be my favorite. What sets apart truly great horror from just horror themed is taking the time to get under your skin psychologically. Something this game excels at. System Shock 2 is at it's most scary when there aren't any enemies around.

Isolation is up there. I guess it encapsulates the genre best out of any game if you want to be technical.

Doom 3 was pretty scary too. I feel like that game don't get enough spect.

For me personally it has to be the OG Ps1 RE1. From the squishy sounds to the moans of the Zombies that shit was terrifying to me. Also add the fix camera angles and it's scary ass hell as you don't know where the Zombie is coming from. Love the ReMakes but that OG RE1 has a special place to me.

Oh and F@CK THEM SPIDERS.!.!!! Lol

Came in here to post Alien Isolation.

The Amnesia games are similar in gameplay if you're after something else.

I love seeing all the love in here for Alien Isolation. That game had me so petrified, that I was afraid to move! I found on subsequent play-throughs, that staying out of the lockers and keeping moving was the best way for me to get through that game. Most of the time.

Also on my list are Silent Hill 1-3 and Resident Evil 1-3.

When I had a fear of zombies, RE1 scared me a lot but my fear disappeared after a year but there is still others that still frighten me. They are the first 4 Silent Hill games (freakin baby monsters, pyramid head, bunny doll, STOP STARING AT ME!!!) and the first 3 Fatal Frame games (ghost... Ghost everywhere and they are not friendly).

For me the absolute scariest part of Dead Space was in 2 when you had to go back on the decommissioned Ishimura. You knew there was going to be some shit.

It was almost pitch black and you could hear the bastards but you didn't know where they were or when they were going to find you. Added with the memories of that ship from the 1st game and you had one hell of an experience.

Those games genuinely made you hate going into the next room. They did an excellent job with 1 & 2.

    3, not so much.

I haven't been able to play many, but I got a nostalgia for playing "Sweet Home" via emulators.

You know, I completely forgot about Sweet Home. I have a Famicom and I should get it for my collection.

This is the right answer. I’d add the start of RE7, and a lot of people like PT.

However, I came into this thread to say UNTIL DAWN! One of my favorite games of all time. So fun and funny with tons of good jump scares and a good story. I also like Man of Medan but not as much.

Does The Last Of Us count? If so, I pick that, although I've seen that game get a lot of shit for its gameplay over the last few years. I find it amazing.

Alternatively, the original RE2 and REmake. I haven't played RE2 Remake yet.

Who is giving TLOU shit for its gameplay? It’s universally acclaimed as one of the best games ever made!!

I'm not a fan a of Naughty Dog gameplay personally, but that's not the point of their games anyway and they are extremely good at the sort of thing they do make.

I agree that it's one of the best games ever made. I've just seen a number of places (including here) people basically saying the story is great but the gameplay is lacking.
However, I don't agree with that sentiment. I thought the gameplay was full of tension and worked great for that type of game.
