Farnborough man gets Transformers tattoo to remember 'fantastic' experience as movie extra filming in Bourne Wood

Lucas Black was chosen for some of the fast paced fight scenes in the movie and set up a Facebook group to keep in touch with friends he made on set

A Farnborough man who was chosen as an extra in the News Transformers: The Last Knight film has described the experience as "eye opening".

Lucas Black, an aerospace quality engineer, will feature in the franchise's fifth instalment which was filmed in Bourne Wood in October.

In September Haslemere company Piece of Cake held a casting call for “men with beards and men without beards who have a strong jaw line" to feature as barbarians in the film.

The father-of-one applied online and sent in a couple of photos and was chosen as one of around 500 extras for the blockbuster movie.

However due to his skills in kickboxing, he was specifically chosen to feature in scenes with the stunt men and at the front of shots and was involved in more action orientated fight scenes.

“There was not a great deal of no action roles, most of us were involved in charging and a select few were selected for special action, where we were up and close with the fighting guys, all with swords and shields and explosions,” he said.
The 43-year-old described the filming as being “very intense” as a day would last from 4am in the morning to 8pm at night, and they would spend around two to three hours in makeup and costume.

One day after he was picking himself off the ground following a fight scene, he found himself walking next to director Michael Bay, who reportedly chooses all the extras himself.

Mr Black told the filmmaker it was his first time in a movie and he had heard "after doing a Michael Bay film, all the others are easy."

In response the director reportedly told him “you guys are really doing a fantastic job, had this been America this would have taken longer to do. You guys have been amazing".

Mr Black also recalled the funniest moment of his filming experience when he and a group of other men were sat in a trench, surrounded by all these fight scenes, and in their medieval costumes with weapons all around them.

One guy then broke the silence by saying "did anyone watch Bake Off last night", leaving the rest of the group in fits of laughter.

After five days of filming in Bourne Wood Mr Black then received a phone call to say he was needed again, this time for 3D modelling for VFX (visual effects).

He was told there was a group of about 12 people specifically chosen. H e had to stand on a turn table where HD photos were taken of him and then inside a massive climbing frame where he was surrounded by hundreds of cameras.

The pictures will be used to fill gaps where he is featured in the film and may even be used for Transformers toys or for online games and game consoles.

After filming ended, Mr Black set up a Facebook group called "The Bourne Wood barbarians" so they could all keep in touch and talk about the experience in detail.

“The amount of emotion that has come out of the site,” he said. “A lot of them feel changed, they would like to do more of this. This was an awesome experience.”

He even decided to get a tattoo, summing up the experience in a logo he had designed.

It consisted of his individual wardrobe number, 499, a Transformer head which resembled a shield, the Transformer nose resembling a sword, crossed axes with arrows in the head, E75, which is the film code name, TLK for The Last Night, and the runes at the bottom which say 2016.

“I have always wanted a tattoo for 20/30 years. It had to be special and this event was such an amazing event, it was life changing, [I thought] this is it,” he said.

He paid credit to his kickboxing teacher, an amputee sportsman John Devaney, who taught him the basic skills he needed, which meant he featured in more of the fight scenes.

“When Piece of Cake casting called out for amputees for the movie, I called John immediately as a way of thanks. He was selected and did all the gruelling hill running we did done, but on one leg. The guy is a hero and a role model. Nothing stops him,” Mr Black explained.

Summing up the whole experience, he said: “It was a fantastic movie, I met lots and lots of good friends, it was an eye opener for all of us.”

He added: “I've never met such a great group of guys. Everyone was incredibly supportive. We worked bloody hard and in between the moments of filming madness with horse charges, explosions, and clashing swords against shields, we found anywhere we could sit, catch a breath and have a damn good laugh.”

That's a cool tattoo. I love how the E75 has been incorporated along with other details.
