I'm torn between these Two and was wondering what everyone's opinion was on them as Toys/Collectors Items?

    Sovereign, all day every day.

In terms of presence and sheer shelf beauty few things come close to him imo and he remains my favourite piece to this day.
His transformation is a pain, and his cannon mode is only ok, but the bot is sublime.

The only trouble you might have is tracking one down right now. There have been 2 versions to date, the original purple version and a more movie accurate blue one which was limited in number. There is supposedly a bigger release of this second one to come so that would be worth waiting for, don't pay a late tax on him.

No comparison. Sovereign. Amazing feel, heft, and presence.

I am veering more towards Sovereign to be honest. I do like Tyrants moving tank treads though

Buy both! Tyrant alt-mode is quite good.

Although the general feeling on this is always Soverign, there is a really strong counter argument for DX9.

He's a much better figure to handle, the transformation is smooth and nothing is overly tight. No painted diecast to scratch. The head sculpt is also better than Soverign, he has a grimacing older appearance. The cannon is MUCH better than Soverign and the overall build is really solid albeit not Fanstoys soilid.

The negatives are his awkward looking feet. Slightly odd proportions and his tiny hands. If you like the appearence in picture of the bot mode you will love it in hand.

This isn't to say either is better. I ended up with two FT and sold Dx9 but that doesn't mean he isn't a brilliant figure, he just gets criticised because he went up against Soverign and FT have their die hards.

Tyrant is really good and costs about half the FT version.

Yep, this. Had both. Tyrant is a nice and solid figure. Aesthetically speaking Sovereign just destroys him in every way.

I like Tyrant better. Sovereign is the better build but he’s so thick and the cannon is meh.

Sovereign for bot mode, Tyrant for alt mode.

Tyrant on its own is nice, minus the feet and awkward hands. But when you put it next to sovereign it’s no contest, sovereign it’s better in every way. I have tyrant in alt mode, where it actually looks better than sovereign, in my opinion of course.

The legs of DX9 ruin him. It's always unfortunate when an otherwise good figure is ruined by one stupid design choice, but there's no looking past how terrible his leg posability is.

I chose Tyrant - he looks great on the shelf! This is also coming from a Fans Toys fanboy.

TFTM bots that have cybertron Alt-modes I prioritize bot mode looks so I went with Sovereign. Sovereign is also a diecast bat. It’s heftier than hefty. I fear for the ratchet joints when posing this thing. That said he’s still my Galvatron since the feet of Tyrant look ....weird.

I have a soft spot for Tyrant since it was the third figure I ever bought when diving into collecting these damn things, but the answer is Sovereign and it ain’t even close.

    I have handled both.

FT Sovereign is a much better "looking" bot mode and I would argue better materials and build (mostly just due to feel and heft than any empirical evidence), but the alt mode is utter crap and the transformation is convoluted, NOT fun by any stretch and just not worth it in the end. I'll never transform it again if I can help it. Again, the alt mode is just bad. DX9 Tyrant is a good looking bot but not quite as well proportioned as Sovereign. The alt mode blows away Sovereign and the transformation is pretty fun and innovative. Not something that I would be flipping back and forth a lot but it is pretty cool. Tyrant is lighter than Sovereign though and the plastic doesn't feel as "crisp" but that is just DX9. The rubber treads give me concern as they will eventually deteriorate without protection. However, as several people have noted, DX9 Tyrant is about half the price of FT Sovereign and that is if you can even find Sovereign at retail and not the inflated after market prices it is going for now.

In the end, I chose FT but it was a tough choice and I was able to get it new and sealed for retail. I really just care about bot mode and am starting to not even care if they transform or not.

All that said, it is all up to you and what you prioritize with your collection/purchases. Either way, they are both good figures.

I agree with this. If you want something that you'll keep on a shelf in bot mode and looks amazing, get a Sovereign if you can. If you want something that you're going to want to flip back and forth or the alt mode is sorta important for you, Tyrant might be your thing. I have both and while Sovereign is my bot mode Galvatron, I don't want to transform it. Personally it's difficult to make some parts move and lock in and I don't want to break it. It's alt mode is....yeah. I'd call it "Ok" and that's me being generous.

Tyrant is a good bot mode but his cannon mode is really good and I have no qualms about flipping it back and forth and worrying about it getting damaged.

With all the Tyrant talk here, I just bought one for a pretty great price on Ebay. It got me interested enough for me to want to check it out in hand and mess around with it for a bit.
I have to say, I have Sovereign, but have not transformed him(bought it new) and am wary of messing around with him or even really changing up his pose very much. I do remember how awesome it was taking him out of the box the first time though...the weight and solid nature of the figure impresses immediately. I could hear Galvatron screaming at someone...

Trying to remember anything wonky about Tyrant since you bought one. I know the first release had the hip skirt pieces reversed but they were on a ball peg so you just popped them off and then back on correctly so the back pieces would line up right in alt mode.

Oh yeah...there are these little purple "cap" pieces on the front hinges of his chest, one on each side that you flip down to transform him. Be careful of those and mindful where they are during transformation as they can snap off easy if you move a piece funny and snag them. When you tuck the head into the body to change modes, make sure you don't scrape the face and take paint off your nose :p  He also has slots for tabs on the back of his hands so you have to lock them into the inside of his arms and tab them in when folding them up for alt mode (only bot I've ever seen have that).

Nothing really "wrong" with him, just those were the little things every Tyrant owner should know. :)

EDIT: One last thing. His fusion cannon has batteries in it that are wrapped in a plastic sleeve. Don't toss out the sleeve. It acts as a sorta spacer to keep the smaller batteries in place when you close it up. Don't look into the fusion cannon either while you're working on it or turning it on. That thing will give you corrective eye surgery it's so bright. :p
