GnG beet me to the explanation, but yeah. Arcee is now transgender. I love when she told sideswipe, "I have as much in common with YOU as I do with THEM." referring to the female TF's.

It makes her new screwed up origin have some meaning from my pov. She's always been a personal fav though.

As i understood it they were transformers that fell to earth and their sparks entered human form and kept being reincarnated till modern day when they found their lost bodies. overlord's spark split in two.

i personally have always heard a Tim Curry voice for Overlord

    ...I still prefer G1 Arcee...

I mean, yeah she was super girly, and gentle and kind and even sometimes pretty motherly, but she'd fight when she needed to. Always thought she was cool that way. And she didn't have some weird "but becomes a beast on the battlefield" thing. She mostly stayed pretty quiet. Like the opposite of Roadbuster.

You heard it wrong and/or from someone making stuff up.

-ZacWilliam, none of that is true.

Is this the new retroactive understanding of Arcee?

I mean, as written, Arcee's being female was to introduce gender to the Transformers. Transformers were not "male" before Jhiaxus made Arcee "female."

Now, I grant, with the advent of Windblade, Chromia, et al, and assuming that the going theory is correct (this, itself, hasn't been made official, has it?) -- that these folks are female as a natural side-effect of the eons of dispersal from Cybertron and following different evolutionary paths -- I can easily grant that "all Transformers were male before Jhiaxus made Arcee switch genders" is a viable re-interpretation.

But I do want to make sure I understand what parts of this explanation are officially stated in canon, and what parts we're filling in....

Nah, females existed on Cybertron way in the old days. Galvatron confirmed.

While Jhiaxus's stated purpose was to introduce gender (or as per the new retcon, reintroduce).... let's be honest, the other TFs were *always* male in the sense of how they're presented by human standards.

She didn't just become transsexual, she was from her intro.

It was dumb. Let's just be honest. There should have been females from day 1. There's no good reason why there wasn't.

Galvatron's hinted that females were present on Cybertron in his day and we have explicit confirmation of Solus. Galvatron suggests like combining Arcee was an attempt to re-introduce the female gender. So Cybertron is actually the abberation with a single gender rather than the colonies

I wasn't aware of this, but this is a retcon I can definitely get behind. I read and re-read Spotlight: Arcee with the thought that I missed something, because it just didn't sit well with me at all. I do like Furman's work, but this was something I just don't feel he should have attempted.

I always thought that femme and mech were frame types and that transformers didn't have gender in the sense that humans do. They have frame types instead.

I don't know that any fiction has ever explicitly made that assertion. But several continuities have Transformer gender as an intrinsic quality - IDW G1 and Aligned to name a couple off the top of my head.

I have no clue...maybe they fold up into his shell?

Agreed. There was no reason Simon Furman had to do this the way he did.

I've never bought "they were always male... by human standards" as a viable explanation for this debate. It may be true, but it really doesn't work for an "in-universe" explanation, which is all I really care about.

(Some of the other responses in this thread work better, accepting that they're generally retcons, but that's what I was getting at in bringing this up)

    Yeah.

If Hasbro ever wants to have a Fan Built Decepticon I think they will have to explicitly make it a "Fan Built Decepticon Poll."
