2016 wasn't a very good year. The world feels like it's trying to wean itself off of its crazy meds with little to no success. HOWEVER, just because this year sucked, doesn't mean that there were a few good things to come out of it. I decided to make this thread to help curb my anxiety and see what good came out of this year. Feel free to post what you think was good about 2016, be it personal or public. I'll start: -Cubs won the World Series. -Leonardo DiCaprio finally got his damn Oscar (and all it took was for him to deal with a bear). -Young Justice Season 3 finally being announced. -Juno Spacecraft reached Jupiter. -Star Wars Rogue One was a huge hit (and it's already made nearly half a billion dollars). -Deadpool became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, ensuring everyone that a sequel is in the works. -Captain America: Civil War. -Doctor Strange. -Pokemon celebrated its 20th anniversary, released its first mobile game with Pokemon GO, and Sun and Moon are the fastest selling Pokemon games EVER, so that franchise is on top of the world right now. Anyone?
I had this exact same idea. Arguably the greatest thing that happened this year was the Chicago Cubs finally winning the World Series after a 108 yr drought. Michael Phelps winning six medals at the Summer Olympics including five gold. And for me personally I got to see an actual Japanese Godzilla film in theaters and Netflix gave me my two favorite shows of 2016: Voltron: Legendary Defender and a little show called Stranger Things.
-NOT getting laid off a 2nd time -Losing some weight -Getting into the world of Gunpla building -Moving downstairs complete with a garage, basement and 2nd bathroom (same duplex) -Building my first Gunpla kit on Xmas Day -Bob Dylan getting a Nobel prize -Getting a Xmas bonus for the second time
Testament released their 11th studio album "Brotherhood of the Snake." Album of the year right there. Dark Souls 3 came out. Finally got to see Iron Maiden live in concert.
- Finished my main Resident Evil run. - Got hooked on Girls und Panzer, Ghost in the Shell, and The Walking Dead. - Moved to a better work location. - More toys to the collection.
Honestly, I don't think 2016 was a "bad" year. I've had many good things happen in my personal and work life, had great adventures with friends, got a perfect score for my 1yr review at the lab I work for + a raise, and my mom, dogs, and friends are all doing well. Oh, it hasn't been perfect by any means, but that's life. In contrast to what's happening in certain places around the world, most of us have it DAMN good. Of course I was sad about people like David Bowie and Prince dying. I grew up listening to their music, and Bowie was absolutely one of my most favorite performers ever...but 2016 isn't any different than any other year. Remove the number brackets that designate the years, and he and the rest are still dead like all others before. They had their time. They made the most of it. Their impact on our lives remains. Life goes on as it always has...
You're right. 2016 wasn't a good year. All year I've had lots of fights with my family about being right and them calling me stupid. Even as of today, even though I was right all along, they make it that they were right. On the upside, We got Pokémon Sun and Moon, Rogue One, Leader Class Soundwave and I got to go to New York.
Back in February, my youngest sister gave birth to her second son, which means I have two baby nephews. I found out I got in the summer that I have over 1200 video games with 28 video game consoles. My plastic crack collection keeps growing. Particularly around the Power Rangers zords. After putting it off for sometime, I got the complete series of Batman Beyond and Justice League Unlimited
Is it weird to anyone else that we judge the quality of a year by how many famous people died? Are we really that obsessed with celebrities?
I can really only speak for myself, but that's not the only metric I'm working on. One bright point in 2016 was the promising research being done into an Ebola vaccine. Canadian-developed Ebola vaccine highly effective, clinical trial shows This is a virus that has killed hundreds or thousands in each outbreak, even as recently as last year, and now we've got a tool that, further testing and application nonwithstanding, might help us to sweep another disease from the doorstep of humanity into the gutter of history. Given that ebola tends to do the most damage in some of the most underdeveloped places in the world, this could be a big deal for a lot of people.
Personal: I had a desent year, I lost weight, cut down on the coffee, blood pressure is down, increased healthy foods intake, and my insomnia is gone This year was better than last year, last year was horrible for me
I got engaged, had a baby, bought a house, bought a new car. It was a good year Next year should be good too. Get to move into house in February, buying a new truck in April, and big trip out west in July!
For me personally: Able to tour a battleship. Was able to return to Florida twice in one year. The other trips I've been able to take during 2016. Masterpiece Beast Wars Optimus Primal in my display case.
My wife is diagnosed with depression and Bipolar Disorder. Shortly after the birth of our daughter Olivia in 2014, and before she got the bipolar diagnosis, she became a completely different person. Started drinking, smoking, and was completely psycho. She went on a rampage. Went out in the middle of the night, stole a shitload of mail from people's mailboxes, then decided to call in medications to several different pharmacies, pretending to work for doctors' offices. She got caught, while driving my car, filled with stolen mail. She wasn't fully diagnosed with Bipolar until 2015. August 2015, she took a bunch of her medications and took off in her car. Ended up plowing it into a pole and got arrested for a DUI. She spent 45 days in jail and rehab last year. It's messed up. Normal wife is awesome. Depressed wife is lazy and doesn't want to do anything. Manic wife is an alcoholic, addicted to controlled medications such as klonopin and vicodin, and completely fucking psycho. My life has been Hell lately. I don't see Normal Wife very often, though I know she does try. Doesn't help that Livi was diagnosed with Leukemia this year.
This past year I got out of a not so great base assignment in Texas (no offense to Texans, but I just don't see the appeal; could've been worse, I suppose) and into an awesome new assignment in Tokyo, Japan, which is exactly where the missus and I wanted to be. We still can't believe that I got the job (it's a special IT position) but I figured why the hell not and volunteered for it, then got the notification I was selected back in January. Was short term notice and was a bit hectic with packing everything up for the move, but it's so worth it. Enjoying the hell out of sightseeing, shopping, and eating around the Kanto Plain area. Awesome place to be for a toy/plastic crack addict and my collection has grown by leaps and bounds since we've arrived. Having fun with entertaining friends and family visiting here too and showing them around. We plan to hike up Mt. Fuji next year (along with visiting other parts of Japan like Hiroshima, Kobe, Osaka, etc.)!
