I mean anyone thinks either the 90s Superboy is influenced by Marvel's Spider-Man or is kind of a DC Spider-Man wannabe?

I mean he does share some similarities no doubt including Knockout being like BlackCat, SideArm like Dr. Ock and King Shark like Lizard. They both even fought in the DC vs. Marvel crossover.

    Compare them.

Are we doing the amalgam comics thing again, Hordakfan?

Short answer: No. Superboy (take your pick which) was an example of Silver-age and 90s comic storytelling, respectively, and Spider-man (the young version I assume you're talking about) was an example of the Marvel method, and in the Adventures and Ultimates universes, an example of sort of marvel-method-revival and the Ultimates subversion of that method. They are characters that are approached in entirely different ways, though they may share similar archetypes at times.

Kyle Rayner is more a DC knock-off of Peter Parker, than Superboy.

Similar origins- both accidentally obtain their powers through happenstance.

With great power comes great responsibility- Uncle Ben killed by a burglar/Kyle's girlfriend stuffed in a refrigerator by Major Force.

Similar occupations- Peter a freelance photographer/ Kyle a freelance artist.

They even look really similar depending on the artist.

    I'm sure there are more.

Kyle Rayner is a Richard Rider knock-off. It's Richard Rider who was the Peter Parker knock-off.

But no, Superboy and Spider-Man have nothing in common. This Superboy/Spider-Man thing is the same kind of shallow, simplistic thread comparing meaningless surface elements that have nothing to do with the actual CHARACTERS that we've had once before. I think it was Hulk and Superman? And the big similarity was that they were both strong? You just have to shake your head.

edit: my bad. It was Captain America/Batman. And big surprise, it was the same thread-starter.

re-edit: Maybe I was thinking about his Thor/Captain Marvel comparison. Also ridiculous.

    A knock-off of a knock-off of a knock-off (don't forget Firestorm).

I'd still point to Kyle being more a Peter Parker knock-off, given that DC was really trying to capitalize on the height of the 90s Spidey mania. Nova was a pretty minor character at that point being only in New Warriors, and his short-lived solo title.

lol yeah, Firestorm fits in there somewhere.

Maybe, but the thing is, Nova in his original 1970s series was a knock-off of the Green Lantern/Green Lantern Corps concept (itself a knock-off of Lensman, but whatever). So in the '90s, when DC wanted to update their GL concept, they ripped off Marvel's approach to ripping off DC's GL concept. Circular.

Perhaps, besides we can only speculate what concept they ripped off anyways.

Gotta say though, some of my favorite characters are rip-offs of previous characters.

Actually, this one is kind of well-documented.

Yeah, pretty much everything borrows from something else, if you know how far back to look and where. Even the earliest super-heroes like Superman and Batman borrowed heavily from pre-existing characters.

Oh cool, I've never actually read any quotes from Marz or Banks on their inspiration for Kyle. I'll have to look that up.

Edit: I don't think well-documented means what it use to, lol.

Spiderman and Superboy are two totally different characters. I do not know much about the superboy from the pre-crisis era other than superboy prime so we can talk about the superboy from post crisis. Very different character, history and audience appeal. Peter was always the bad-luck-parker in youth and adulthood and superboy represented the rebellious teenager of the 90s and how they respectivelly coped with their problems.

I need to go back and look at that amalgam comic to see where the connection was but they did not leave an impression since i cannot remember a thing about any of them. Not saying they were not fun oneshot elseworlds to read to see both universes folded into one, just nothing earthshattering.

No. Maybe the Superboy from the Legion of Superheroes cartoon because they were both nerds trying to fit in with the normal crowd.
