Ever realize how many new molds the Prime line has?

OK, so with my new obsession with the Prime line back in tact, I was looking at the sheer number of new molds the Prime line has released in the last 2 years.

I actually think it is pretty insane if you really sit back and count them all.

I did that today. You know what number I came up with? 30! Between Deluxe, Voyager and Powerizer there are a total of 30 unique molds in the line to this point! That is beyond ******ingly insane if you think about it. Here is the breakdown:

    Hasbro:
    2 Powerizers
    9 Voyagers
    18 Deluxes

    Takara:
    2 Voyagers
    1 Deluxe

That is a total of 30 molds. To put that in perspective, I was taking a look at my Classics line. I counted roughly 28 molds. I know that number maybe a bit low, but I have a pretty full collection and cannot think I have more then 7 molds missing in that collection. BTW, this is just counting the Deluxe or bigger lines.

Maybe this is the reason why we are getting smaller hollower figures. We are getting so many new molds that they need to cut cost where they can to continue pumping out new molds.

Now I feel bad saying that Smokescreen should have had his own mold. It would be nice, but can a company really do so many new molds in a year and still have them be great? Is that possible? I guess this explains why Arachnid sucked so bad.

The numbers don't add up...unless you're also counting the FE ones.

Something similar happened with Animated years ago. And look where it got us :p

As for classics, to be honest, there's lots of repaints for them and the repaints aren't usually "Shadow strike" or "sniper attack", say, repaints, but actual characters, so it makes sense.

Animated had 22 unique deluxe molds, plus 6 retools, 11 unique voyagers plus 1 retool, 3 unique leader class molds, and a supreme figure. Then throw in a few more if you count the unreleased ones like Marauder Megs, Hot Shot, pre-beast Wasp, etc. I find the Animated toys have better quality than the Prime ones. So I'm not sure about your theory.

Yeah, I am counting the FE's since they are part of the Prime Line:

Here is the breakdown (actually, found more!)
    1- Powerizer Prime
    2- FE Voyager Prime
    3- PRiD Voyager Prime
    4- FE Deluxe Size Prime
    5- PRiD Megatron
    6- FE Deluxe Megatron
    7- FE Deluxe Starscream
    8- PRiD Voyager Starscream
    9- FE Deluxe Vehicon
    10- PRiD Deluxe Vehicon
11- PRiD Takara Deluxe Jet Vehicon (well 1/2 new)
    12- PRiD Deluxe Soundwave
    13- PRiD Deluxe Knockout
    14- PRiD Voyager Skyquake
    15- PRiD Takara Voyager Unicron
    16- PRiD Takara Voyager Breakdown
    17- PRiD Deluxe Arachnid
    18- PRiD Voyager Thundertron
    19- PriD Deluxe Rumble
    20- FE Deluxe Bumblebee
    21- Powerizer Bumblebee
    22- PRiD Deluxe Bumblebee
    23- FE Deluxe Arcee
    24- PRiD Deluxe Arcee
    25- FE Voyager Bulkhead
    26- PRiD Voyager Bulkhead
    27- FE Deluxe Cliff Jumper
    28- PRiD Deluxe Cliff Jumper
    29- PRiD Deluxe Ratchet
    30- PRiD Deluxe Wheeljack
    31- PRiD Voyager Ultra Magnus
    32- PRiD Deluxe Kup

32 (or 31.5 depending what you think of Vehicon) damn original molds. That is nuts!

Well, I don't recall what was going on at that same time with the Animated line. However, with the Prime Line, we also had new released molds for Generations/FoC line, including the Bruticus combiner. Not to mention the Prime line technically is not over yet, so that is not a completed number at this point.

We may have seen close to 40 new molds in the last 2 years from Has/Tak, if not more. And I am not talking slight retools or repaints. All unique molds where parts are not shared.

Make that 31 molds. Unless I majorly missed something, this one doesn't actually exist:
The list would be even longer if you included the multiple Cyberverse molds. Also, if we're counting Takara's jet Vehicon as a new mold, than all of the so far revealed Beast Hunters figures will also count as new molds.

    I wouldn't be counting the FE's.

The 2008 Universe line was running during pretty much the same time as Animated.

Fixed, I meant knockout. So it stays at 32.

I don't have the new Jet Vehicon. Is it exactly the same with just a couple of fins added? That would be more of a retool in my book, so that can bring it to 31.

Why not? They did see mass release in Canada and overseas, and now are seeing limited release here. They did spend the time and money to make them. So it does go to the bottom dollar in the long run, and they are all original molds. I am looking at these molds and I am not seeing them share parts.

Yeah, I wouldn't be counting FE either. They used to be generations figures shoehorned into their own preview line that is separate from the main line.

And Jet vehicon is essentially a big remould, not a new mould. Sure he's a more extensive redesign than Hot Shot or Dead End, but he's still a remould.

Jet Vehicon is just one big remold.

Because they were originally canned for the actual PRIME line: PRID.
The only reason we see them now is because of fanboy demand. But they aren't PRID- they are a different line- like its own Classics line.

Yeah, but they still go along with the Prime cartoon. So I am just thinking these were all the molds that were released specifically for the Prime cartoon. If the Prime Cartoon didn't happen these figures would have never happened.

Ok. I didn't think to check to see if you had Knock Out on there.

It's what I would classify as a major retool. There are definitely shared parts there, but there's enough new one's that it's not as simple as most retools are. Most massive retools are considered new molds entirely. Which is why I would count the jet Vehicon, and armored-up Beast Hunters figures to be new molds, rather than just retools. There are shared parts there, but there's enough new to justify considering them new molds.

As for the First Editions. I definitely count them. Then again, I would also count the Cyberverse stuff too...

FE counts. They came out before the main line and some of the molds have been used in the main line (starscream/bumblebee 2 pack, AM skywarp)

And this is a bad thing because?

I'm sorry but I don't find anything horrifically wrong with this number in the line. If anything it's a good viratiy so far and Beast Hunters will only expand it with the upcoming new molds.

Why wouldn't we count FE? Alucard77 is counting molds in the Prime line - i.e. toys released for the Transformers Prime cartoon, right? He didn't say the "PRID" line or the "RID" line or the "FE" line. IMHO these are "Prime" toys which should be counted.

    Not saying this is bad.

I am just saying that maybe this is the reason why the figures are smaller with less plastic, etc. They are spending all their money doing 32 molds just for this one line in the last 2 years. That is a lot of molds and very little repaints.

It doesn't seem so huge to me...I don't have direct numbers right now but Cybertron seemed to be a lot bigger. But I definitely could be wrong.
