So we all know that Diaclone pretty much gave us the first two seasons of transformers toys, but when did the original molds start happening and what was the first to be an actual "transformer" and not a Diaclone.
This is something I wanna learn as a g1 collector who didn't grow up with g1 but has an affinity for it. Were combiners like superion and menasor original molds?
    Help me get educated!

1986 - The movie toys, except Ultra Magnus, were the first Transformers designed as Transformers.

So the whole scramble city deal with the new combiners was a re use of Diaclone molds?

So which figure can we really call the first actual "transformer"?

There's no way of knowing of what the actual first was, without speaking to the people involved with their production in the 80's.

The molds were created for a Diaclone subline called Jizai Gattai, but when Transformers proved popular, Takara elected to scrap their original plan and just release them as Transformers.

Weren't the 1985 Mini Autobots original moulds for the line? I thought I heard that somewhere.

They were probably meant to have been designed for the Microchange line before it was cancelled, since they still retained the "toy vehicle" look. I'm pretty sure the movie toys were the first real "new" Transformer toys (again with the exception of UM).

I would also venture to guess that Hot Rod was one of the first toys to be designed, if not the first.

The 1986 Triple Changers, the movie figures (minus Ultra Magnus and possibly the Autobot Cassettes), presumably Trypticon, the Predacons and the Battlechargers.

Outside of the movie characters, possibly Trypticon now I think about it, metroplex along with the first 4 teams of scramble city combiners were initially designed for a Diacone line that got scrapped in favour of Transformers. Since Metroplex and Trypticon were touted around the same time it makes sense.

Yeah, the 85 minibots (Warpath and chums), plus the new wings and weapons for the coneheads, were the first things specifically designed for Transformers.

The Diaclone Corvette (Tracks) was the last in the series of Diaclone's Car Robots. Apparently, an American car was chosen for his alt mode because at the time it was designed, they already knew that Transformers was just about to hit, and they created it with the US Transformers line in mind.

I'm no toyline expert, but shouldn't this be a simple matter of subtracting previously extant Diaclone/etc. molds from the TF production line and deciding which toys followed next in succession as LEGIT Transformers toys DESIGNED as such...?!?

Because that seems like the most logical path to an answer as far as I'm concerned.

    Anyone?

It isn't, because as stated many times, there were several figures designed for Diaclone, but released as Transformers. So the Op only wants figures desigend entirely to be Transformers from the start.

I recall reading it somewhere that it was 'Sunstreaker'. My bad...I can't recall the article but it was online and was around a month plus.

Which is why I specified the subtraction of "previously extant Diaclone, etc. MOLDS," amirite?

The guys on RFC say the Sunstreaker mould was the first of the original TF lineup that was designed.... not sure if that is true?

Sunstreaker was the first diaclone designed. He wasn't the first Transformer. On the diaclone box for sunstreaker it said d-01
