I was all hyped about the new figures a few months ago but now they lost all their appeal to me. None of them really look that cool anymore except for maybe Prime and Jetfire, it might just be because the QC is like a McToy compared to the SOC Voltes V I got last week. Anyone here have this happen to them too?
Actually I didn't care for a long time because of the Universe line and really started getting excited about it over the past few days. So I guess I'm the opposite.
Happened to me. I got back into Macross and everything TF, at least movie-wise, just looks and feels subpar.
it's because the paint apps on the movie figs are shit and also they are overstylized EVA flavored with bits of vehicles sticking off of them
the toys from movie 1 ended up winning me over, but I've seen barely anything appealing in this new one. I definitely want the Bludgeon/Whirl pack, but as those are movie 1 toys, doesn't really count. Ransack and Swerve aren't bad, I guess.
the only difference between this line and the first movie like is this time around i am being way way way more picky
For me, the only "must get" is Sideswipe... and I am satisfied with it. Rampage may be on my list, as well as the Alternator sized Bumblebee that comes with Sam... and that's about it for this line.
Those are just two figures amongst my growing Macross collection that is making me think twice about buying ROTF stuff. It just doesn't compare. I'm definitely starting to switch over to the "quality over quantity" side of collecting.
m One of my other problems aside from design aesthetic, is that rubbery cheap feeling plastic, the Animated plastic was better, felt more sturdy. It make the paint apps look worse then they really are.
I feel the exact same way about both the movie lines. The figures are not only ugly but alot of them are just plain rubbish (eg. Screamer). For the time-being (& for the foreseeable future), My money will be going towards G1's & Beasties. IMO Why is it that Animated/Classics 2.0 Figures feel above & beyond so much better in quality than the cheap & flimsy plastic used for ROTF figures?
Bought a group of ROTF figs today (Leader Prime, Sideswipe, 'preview' Bumblebee, Dirt Boss, Ransack, and a Prime Gravity-Bot.), and I can't help but think: I'm really going to miss Animated. (and Universe) It's not a matter of looks. Sideswipe and Optimus both look especially kickass, but the ROTF toys I've got remind me of the good old times of many BW and RiD toys. I've already run into a few instances of going "I know it's supposed to go this way! Fit you goddamed (long string of f-bombs) FIT!!!" I'll miss the simpler times of simpler toylines where parts don't get in each others' way and create vehicle modes that don't look like they were broken and glued back together by an eight year old. I think I'll like the basic/scout line though, for the simpler designs and out-there alt modes. Gravity bots are fun to mess with too. The rest is a "we'll see".
It might also be because there are a lot more characters so being a completist like I was with movie 1 would end up with a ton of figures that I never play with
I looked at few at the store, but none of them really seemed like anything I had to add to my collection. Just none of that happy feeling I'd get from finding a Universe or Animated toy I wanted to add to the collection. Then there were the little things like the paint not matching up to even the picture on the back of the package. Or all the problems I've read about with some people's figures so it feels like you'd be taking a gamble of what sort of figure you'd get. Just way too easy to pass up as well knowing they will be on the store shelves forever. So yea if I had to describe them in just one word I think I'd use "eh" as well.
Eh, I like about 75% of the movie figures. If anything, I miss the variety. It was nice having Animated, Universe, and even for a time some Movie 1 stuff on the shelves to choose from. I really like them all. As for QC, maybe its just be, but the QC on my first Animated figures when they first came out were 100x worse than the ROTF figures I have gotten so far. I remember when I first got Animated Starscream out of the box all his fingers and tail fins fell off. I bought all of Wave 1 that day, sans Cybertron Megs, and the only one who didn't have QC issues was Deluxe Prime. I'm not saying the ROTF line is perfect, but I remember the first Animated figures being much worse in the QC department.
I'm happy to have the ROTF toys since I poured all my freetime in the past 2 weeks in a Gundam model. It's nice to have a new robot that I don't have to feel guilty about playing with.
I am trying to like them. I spent about a hour today just looking at the packages and finding all the toys that are out. I found one shop that had a lot of Soundwave, I was planning to get him. Soundwave was terrible in person. It looked so far from being whatever it is supposed to be that it was more like a toy from the $2 shop. The pics floating around the net had got my hopes up, I don't know how it can look so cheap in person. I ended up getting my doubles of Universe Smokescreen, Dinobot, Animated Cybertron mode Optimus and Animated Cliffjumper. I have not been able to find a Fallen anywhere. I am still holding out hope for Human Alliance and Jetfire. As far as moving over to collecting other toys - I sold off all my Macross, MOTU and gave all my Star Wars to my Son, so that won't happen.
I gotta say, I was way more excited to see some of the Fans Project and other kits from Canada-con a few weeks ago. Hasbro's decision to put all its eggs in the movie basket has really turned me off. Oh well, now I can save up for the expensive add on's later this year.
