I would say do a black base coat and dry-brush the figure to restore the color.

Fine tipped Gundam markers are ideal for panel lining figures. They come in gray and black as far as I recall.

For bigger area painting\not just detailing, regular tipped gundam markers are also fine [painted up my AM Breakdown with those, no problems]

if not planning to paint the white, paint it all lightly with some diluted gray (or black or whatever) then wipe away once dry

This is basically what I did. Only later did I come to realize that this is the much hyped wash technique I never fully understood. Works like a charm. Depending on the paint you use, may not be best to wait for it to dry completely. Just be careful as you wipe.

You should be wiping excess away no matter what you decide you use- paint wash, Gundam pen/marker, etc.

I have a brush tip Gundam pen that I used to use for panel lining my Gundams, and that thing is awesome. As are the standard Gundam pens.

I'd only suggest AGIANST the sharpie. Just because.

yeah, if you use markers and mess up, and break outside the panel lines - wipe it off....

I've found paint washes to be much more efficient and quicker. You could literally give the whole figure a solid wash in under 5 minutes. Pens take forever...
