    Hey folks,
I just got Earthrise Grapple today and besides making him a bit more pretty and trimming those 5 mm pegs that break on everybody I want to give him a specific accessory respectively enhance/upgrade one he already has: I want to turn his claw into a grappling claw à la Bionic Commando so he can live up to his name.

    Progress/Updates:

How to split his head and paint his eyes

Disassembly issues - only pins/no screws

First images of Grapple (almost) completely painted

    How I made the cables

First image with the grappling claw in action (unpainted connection)

What I used as the cable (material) and some lore to the gimmick

The "cable" will arrive on Monday so I'll show some things I did today first.
I took apart the head to do something about that unintended "lightpiping" his eyes got due to the semi-translucent orange plastic his head is made of. This time I heated the head with a hairdryer before I used any other tools on it unlike I did on my SIEGE Ironhide and Impactor as you might saw in my WfC SIEGE Impactor (hovercar, Ironhide mold, Requiem of the Wreckers inspired) thread where I always broke the upper one of the three pegs that connect the head halves of WfC trilogy figures' heads.
    IMG_20200314_223056.jpg
...and it worked. But I started on the bottom of the head with a hobby knife.
Then I painted the inside of the back of the head black and his eyes in a metallic blue after I removed the original glossy bright blue paint:
    IMG_20200314_223007.jpg
But it makes the plastic look darker from the the outside because the plastic isn't completey opaque.
    IMG_20200314_222938.jpg
So if you want to do that ,too, either use silver instead of black if you don't like the look anyway or first paint the inside white and then black. But it's just the back of the head anyway so it's not that bad.
And here's how it looks now:
    IMG_20200314_223803.jpg
And with the back of the head lit up to show that it's not translucent anymore:
    IMG_20200314_223715.jpg
And you might have spotted some details I already painted. I'll do a lot more and weather him to highlight all of his details even more and give him a gritty look.

I have to add that this figure is very customization UNfriendly because there is not a single screw on this thing. Everywhere you usually have a screw there's one of those flat pins.

So painting is pretty much done now except of washing/panel lining him. I'll post a picture(s) tomorrow as soon as it's done.
I'm trying to make 5 mm pegs now. I tried with apoxy sculpt but I'm not sure on how to make them to be an exact 5 mm peg. I tried with kind of a mold (just used a hand of another Transformers which didn't turn out that well - I had to drill it out). So first sculpt them, let them harden and them grind them down to 5 mm? Or maybe better use epoxy resin? Do you guys have some tipps on how to best make those?

I usually cannibalize existing toys for 5mm pegs. Currently battlemasters are good for those, or old TR/PotP headmaster/pretender guys. They’re usually easy to find, and cheap.

I have to say I'm not a fan of that BUT old Cybertron trilogy toys' Mini-Con ports would be perfect :D
So which toy has the most Mini-Con ports and is the cheapest on Ebay? :p

How about 3D-printing your 5 mm pegs?

I don't have a 3D printer but I found a set of 5 mm pegs and ports on Shapeways or better @Spudmunkey showed them to me.
Maybe I'll get those. But I wanted something quick and cheap and where I could cast the cable in. So I guess it'll take a bit more time until I can finish this one.

There’s also plastic rods available to buy, or so I’m told. Styrene too, apparently. Cut to fit.

Man, those capped pins in ALL the Earthrise figures make me kinda happy they're such solid figures bit really sad they're more trouble than they're worth to use as custom bases. :(

I'm glad there's nothing in the Earthrise line so far I heavily want to customize. Only some touch ups and weathering that doesn't need disassembly. But I hope there'll be an Artfire in this line or the Selects one. Repainting an Inferno could be a pain without disassembling him.

So I'm almost done with painting. Only a hand full of details I forgot are still missing and a final clear coat.

I just ordered 500 LEGO pins. They fit into 5 mm ports perfectly. I just have to see if they got enough friction for my purposes.
So stay tuned for further updates ;)

If you have a Dollar Tree near you, they may stock a pack of plastic crazy straws that are roughly 5 millimeters in diameter. The diameter isn't perfect, but you may be able to be thicken the thinner ones using super glue, nail polish or Future floor polish.

I already tried straws. But they fray out too easily. I was thinking about stuffing them with hot glue or Apoxy but the outside would still be the frail straw. Maybe I'll try that and grind the edges of the straws so they get in smoother but as I already ordered LEGO Technic pins those are my preferred choice.
And where I live you don't pay with dollars ;)  Btw are those kind of stores still open in the US?

You can easily buy 5mm acrylic rods off eBay or from plastic shops.

I checked a Conrad store in here a while ago but every single rod there had too much tolerance.
But I might have found something:

The straws are made out of a thick plastic and are reusable. IMG_2656 2.JPG I haven't been out of the house that much, so I'm not sure if Dollar Tree is still open.

Uh, yea. I've been looking for such straws online but didn't find any.
EDIT: Except ones made out of metal.

    I just received my order....they DON'T
So I will make some cables for poses in which he doesn't do the Tarzan and for swinging poses I'm counting on my plan B:
But it'll take some time until those caps will arrive.
