Man. I wasn’t too happy about the quality of DX9’s Montana from reviews. But, their Motormaster looks great in Robot mode. Now, I’m on the fence with this set.
Oh, is that why they're the wrong shape? I thought that was weird. You're totally right though, those are his little wrists poking out. Interesting. Unfortunately that means it's not an option to keep Roadking out of the combiner, which is a shame for two reasons: A. He's a magnificent figure with an unbelievable transformation that I wouldn't want to hide away and B. Leaving him out is the only prayer that combined mode has of not falling over backwards.
Yeah. I thought I'd just do XTB's, but I was impressed with how FT included there trailer in Roadking's transformation so I bought him and Spoiler. Then I picked up Montana for cheap, pre-ordered Capone, and decided to grab Henry while I was at it.
...so if I get DX9 Motormaster, I basically only have to get their Drag Strip and Dead End to have a fully functional Menasor, at least from the front and sides? ...hmmmmmm. I was never considering this set at any point, but I'm not so in love with the appearance of XTB's that I wouldn't even consider a different option.
The more I look at this, the more convinced I am that I'll go with DX9 for combined mode (IF I feel the need to HAVE a combined Menasor). I just like the proportions way more than XTB, and since I already need to get XTB Motormaster anyway, and I'd need a new set of limb-bots anyway... I'm thinking "why not just get this and the two arm-bots and be good for roughly $300?" ESPECIALLY if some kind soul makes 3d printed car shells for those of us who don't care about individual modes.
Any option to cover the screw hole on the back of Capone's head? Maybe @jream can do a cover like with FT Phoenix.
The back is cleaner on all three DX9 bots compared to their FT counterparts, for what it's worth. The coloring is better on all three too, imo. The only issue is whether DX9's QC will hold up compared to FT's.
How do you figure? I mean, yeah, it's super obvious that Capone has a cleaner back than Roadking, and I'm neither agreeing nor disagreeing on Henry vs Magnum because I'm too lazy to look for images. But I've got Montana and Spoiler right in front of me, and their backs are surprisingly similar considering how different their transformations are. Sure, Montana's doesn't come down as low on his back, but on the flip side Spoiler's doesn't reach above his torso the way Montana's does. I'd say is more of a draw, unless you're counting the fenders on the backs of Spoiler's or the hood flaps on his calves. But even then I prefer the fenders and flap calves to calf gaps and car kibble on the outside of Montana's forearms.
You're right, the Breakdowns are both pretty similar. I like Montana's more because, ironically enough, his spoiler is more aerodynamic and angular and FT's is a bit flatter. Also, as you mentioned, there is just less kibble hanging around his legs. Generally, I think FT figures are designed to look fantastic head on and they have great paint and cool little details, but their backs leave something to be desired and their transformations get pretty involved and intricate.
Ah, I see! That makes sense. The Stunticons are definitely characters that I could see doubling or tripling up on as well. Especially Breakdown. Countaches are still the coolest looking car ever made.
Yep. I thought about getting them just to have them but the colors never appealed to me and I'm not a fan of the XTB's anymore, after I got DX9's and FT's. I'm actually in the process of swapping stuff out. XTB's toy versions will be staying and will continue to get the rest of them regardless because those remind me of the G1 toys the most. If I considered a 4th set though, it would be the TransFormMission's Havoc set.
I'm guessing this is already answered before, so apologize for asking again. What's the small motormaster standing in front of the truck form?
