I never read any of the Dreamwave issues before they go bankrupt. I've seen a few images from DW comics on Google and the characters look a lot like the G1 characters. Is DW in anyway connected to G1? or it's just a separate connection?
Uh, that's a loaded question. It is related to DW's version of G1. Just like currently IDW is IDW's version of G1.
If, when you say "G1", you mean "the G1 cartoon", it's not DIRECTLY connected, but it's very evocative of it, with character designs, personalities and speech quirks all primarily drawn from the cartoon. The first mini-series, in particular, before new writers came on and made a lot of additions to the history, was written as if it could have vaguely fitted in the time-gap between the cartoon and the movie.
It was marketed as G1 for nostalgia sales. I haven't read all of them, but from what I gather, basically seasons 1-2 of the cartoon happen in the comic's past, with a few instances of incompatibility (basically any flashback from the cartoon is ignored as well the Dinobot's origin), but some events from the cartoon are referenced if I remember right, such as Optimus' and Megatron's fight on the dam from the pilot being in The War Within. It ignores everything else and does it's own thing from there.
Initial 6 issue series was meant to take place in G1 cartoon continuity after Season 2 and before the movie. After they exploded in popularity, they abandoned that idea and started to re-write their own things (ie: War Within, etc.) to give them more creative freedom. A bit of pride on the writers' behalf of not wanting to be restricted by previous creator's imaginings of characters.
Are the DW comics are worth reading? Cause I get bored and uninterested if the comic is, how can I say it "SUCKS"
Varies. Some of 'em are kinda dull (the opening comics of the main series had very slow pacing), but some of them are neat (War Within). I mean, we have some long-time TF scribes like Furman in there, so there is some good stuff. Art also varies, ranging from 'dull surprise' expressions everywhere (i.e. faces that really didn't emote much) to fairly good. It had a house style I didn't like.
please forgive me, but you seem to be saying, yes,no,maybe and I dont know. first you say that seasons 1 & 2 are part of the book, then you say it ignore everything after the damn fight in the first 3 episodes?
Volume 1 is a decent read Volume 2 is killer and one of the best stories ever I don't care who doesn't agree. The ongoing started with a bang then slowed down and then picked back up. War Within were definitely worth the read with the exception of the Wildman/Furman one.
They're very mediocre. Not offensively bad but definitely not good either, they're similar in my opinion to how I view Furman's initial run in IDW, I didn't hate reading them, but I have no desire to ever go back and re-read them. People often cite War Within as good, but I found it to be pretty darn weak. As for continuity, as people have said it is similar to IDW in that it is a "new G1 universe", however it is a lot more chained to G1 then IDW is. The initial volume, for example, seemed to be written with the idea that it could be slotted into the time-skip of the cartoon, albeit by the time Volume 2 began it started its own universe with its own continuity. Neither direction was particularly fantastic, honestly.
I think the best description of the DW/early IDW stuff is that it's really forgettable. I read the entire DW run and none of it stuck with me, all I can remember is liking some of the WWI character designs. Of the early IDW stuff, Stormbringer is the only highlight I can really bring to mind. I'm not really a fan of Furman's writing style, to be honest.
I was very hard on Dreamwave for many years, but just recently have revisited it and have more fond memories. Partly nostalgia for that time of my life, but also because the stories aren't that bad. I still think Dreamwave's Armada series was very good.
Agreed with both. Unfortunately, DW abandoned me no thanks to PatLee bad handling the company to bankruptcy while I abandoned IDW, not a fan of Robert's UM revelation.
read them for sure . that sunstorm/ omega supreme fight is probably some of Dons best artwork ever . story throughout the series goes up and down ....but so has Idw ...infact id go as far as to say DW was more consistent then IDW has been to date ( james roberts is awesome for real though )
things i remember as liking was grimlock kicking ass in war within volume 2 and the sunstorm saga in the ongoing
The first volume really didn't impress me, with very decompressed storytelling and villains like Lazarus. I do understand it picked up after I left. Nope, separate continuities.
Nope, separate continuities. I think Dreamwave couldn't match their initial impact, that coupled with what Pat Lee did, put the nail in the coffin. Their initial impact was big, I was very impressed by the stuff they were putting out. As time went on and the problems were made public, that's when it started to come apart. That enforcement of a "house style" was a bad decision too.
