When, at the start of the summer, I saw a customized Ironhide for sale on ebay going for a price I could never afford, I decided I wanted to get this figure and see what I could do it with my limited painting skills.

This is the result, and I can say I'm quite happy with him, since it was my first attempt at repainting.

I gave him some more weapons...I don't know from where they came from. I bought them off a flea-market stand along with a damaged ROTF Leader Class Optimus Prime I "rescued" and restored a bit and repained. The sellers told me he thought they were Transformers weapons too, and since they fit the hands of both 'bots, I believe they are indeed TF weapons.

My brother just bought an leader ironhide while on holiday and has had a problem with the left leg near his waist/hip.
According to him it did ratchet at first, but after a day the leg seemed to lock and now seems incredibly loose; as if it is about to come off. Its a shame really, as he has only transformed it twice and for it to break like that is a bit of a joke. Has anyone else had this problem? I understand people have had a missing ratchet in the same leg, so is this somehow related?

Picked this guy up a few days ago, had some time to mess with him and assemble my opinions.

I'd just like to preface this by saying that I understand why Hasbro felt the need to simplify the transformations of the DOTM toys, and that ROTF Prime probably was a bit too fiddly and complex for kids to mess with, and I know that adult collectors are a small part of the target demographic. Simpler toys with less paint apps are a sensible economic choice in a troubled economy such as the present one.

But even taking all of the above into account, this toy is still just awful.

The total and inexplicable lack of articulation in the legs, arms, waist and neck, the absurdly simplistic transformation that struggles to reach the complexity of the average deluxe, the terrible blue plastic of the legs and guns and the fact that the roof broke off the first time I tried to transform him all gather together to make this thing by far and away the worst Transformer item I have ever purchased.

In terms of design and ambition, this toy feels lazy beyond words, especially when placed next to the awesomely engineered Leader Sentinel Prime. I paid forty pounds ($70) for this thing! Where exactly is my forty pounds worth of value? It ain't in the parts count, it ain't in the engineering, it ain't in the paint apps and it ain't in the QC. DotM Voyager Ironhide costs way less, and has way more of everything! I genuinely don't understand how this Leader Class Ironhide came to exist in it's present form.

It's made even worse by the fact Ironhide is my favourite movie character, both in terms of his bot mode design, his alt mode and his actual character and role in the films. I've waited SO LONG for an awesome Leader Class Ironhide to chill out with my HA movie bots, and to end up with this cheap, lazy, inarticulate piece of junk is genuinely annoying.

He's going to stay in my collection, because Leader Prime and the HA Autobots need an Ironhide, (and also because I broke him and can't be bothered to sell him on for the minuscule amount this broken joke of a brick would fetch) but man, this is just SUCH a poor entry in a line that contains Leader Starscream, Leader Prime and and Leader Sentinel.

    Ick. :(

I recently got Human Alliance Backfire and it looks best in weapon mode and it would have looked cool if leader Ironhide can hold him properly, even if the peg fits in his fists, the weight of Backfire is too much for the ratcheted shoulder joint of Ironhide, well at least with mine it is and then I have to worry about keeping him standing.

Still Backfire can be mounted as a shoulder cannon onto Ironhide, and if you have the original color (not the repaint that comes with a larger human alliance figure) Backfire, it actually suits Ironhide, well that is if you like Ironhide with a giant shoulder cannon.

I haven't tried it with Ironhide yet, but with some of the other HA toys if the weapon's too big for one hand, I'll have them support the cannon with the other hand as well. Like the way people hold rifles...

Yes that will be fine if it had finger articulation or even some wrist swivel, so using a second fist won't look right, also this is Leader Ironhide using two hands like that exposes the kibble on his arms more obviously.

I had to give it a try, and IH's chest is in the way so he can't hold Backfire with both hands. However, when I swiveled the Mech Tech peg on Backfire so it's more centered, Ironhide's able to hold him up pretty well. Mine is, at least...

i dont have an issue with IH holding backfire, you just have to swivel the peg out to the side so you can get a decent push on it/balance it right.

My Ironhide holds Backfire and Tailpipe with absolutely no problems... at the same time, with Backfire's peg in the default position. Maybe I'm lucky?

if you push the mask down into the hole in the neck it can "clip" to the front of the hole and stay hidden away inside it. there is no need to remove the whole mechanism. the one down side to this is it does warp plastic on which the mask sits a little since it is being stressed while sitting clipped in the neck hole.

All right, I set him in front of the heater for 10 minutes and gave the neck a good twist, and it came loose. Thanks for leaving that video link right where I can see it, Matt, I'm gonna do that now.

Mine stays down reasonably well just by pushing it down with the leaver on the back of his head especially if his head is turned but it seems to actually be designed to "stick" in the down position if you push the lever all the way down.

There's a spot on his arm you can put the gun on (a screw hole) but he's a bit lacking in mechtech ports for his arms really.

If I wanted to list the number of way he could or should of been better and pointed out his rough spots ; I'll be here a while.

    Negatives :
    1) The blue plastic is ugly and it's also inaccurate it make him look like he's wearing jeans too.
    2) His wheels are moulded in blue then painted black - Why ?
    3) The way the mechanism for the windows and hood works is a disaster of bad design tolerances.
    4) his shoulders pop off far to easily he needed a double cup joint really to compensate for the finicky Transformation of the shoulders.
    5) to much kibble on his arms
    6) not enough paint on his legs or body in general little of the detail is picked out.
    7) They didn't even paint his side windows.
    8) why's he got a big lump of kibble on his backside and his back looks messy.
    9) There's plenty of mass in his feet to allow for heel spurs to make him stand better but they didn't seem to want to bother.
    10) He's got an ugly face ruined mainly but the creepy clear blue eyes.
    11) nothing holds that truck roof down in vehicle mode so it flops about.
    12) Sound effects are not very high quality.
    13) He only barely stands up due to weird knees and can easily tip over backwards due to the lack of proper heels.
    14) Mechtech weapons don' seem to work very well with him and unlike Sentinel he has no live port or anything that uses the feature in an interesting way.
    15) His wrists neither rotate or his fists open.
    16) For the Autobot heavy Weapons specialist his weapons look a bit wimpy

    Positives :

    1) At least the look of his chest is actually accurate for a change
    2) When you do eventually manage to struggle with the kibble to get it into truck mode it does actually make a quite handsome truck.

    Neutral Observations.

    1) No minicon ports - But the way his knife fits in his leg was very nearly one.
    2) I feel he should be able to wear Bumblebee's backpack in either mode he's the right size to do so but lacks any ports to enable that - which is a shame really.

Overall - far from being anything special as I always say he should have been an Ultra with a small sound box in his gun/s and not a leader at all. I'd much rather of had Megatron, Bonecrusher, Shockwave, Scrapper, Longhaul, or Blackout as a leader instead.

I do not think the designed of this toy should be putting it on their resume.

RedAlert Rescue, You summed it up perfectly.

After having them both for awhile, I think Leader BB is better. Making Leader IronHide, The worst Leader I own. I think its the worst leader since TFM Megatron. I actually like ROTF Megatron more.

The decisions made on this one to incorporate certain giommicks ruins the potential for a GREAT design. instead, its less than mediocre. The chest cannon's appeal wore off the 4th time I did it.

got mine for the price of a deluxe here, i'm happier with him than sentinel, the head wasn't glued on mine, and the ratchets were in place, great figure and looks good with the other leaders and the HA's, has something other leaders lack, playability. i'm glad about the lack of mech tech ports, especially on the vehicle mode, they're not for me

It's Toys like Leader Ironhide that make me fearful of Hasro making decent Ultra's again some point in the future - as Ultra's with no electronics are often great - but with they don't work as well in my view.

I like Bee a little better than Ironhide too but even bee has so odd design choices in his limbs that means he's not as posable as you might expect him to be. But despite he's not a embarrassment by any means - Ironhide is perilously close to being a poor toy.

Though he looks OK as a display piece and as I said earlier I do actually like the truck mode quite a lot.

Poor design of the joints can be a problem lately though I find that's why Sentinel stands a bit funny too.
