A family member got me one of these today as an xmas gift. They didnt know too much about my hobby. I collect G1 and G1 related figures. Im not sure if I should exchange it or keep in the box and just put it on my shelf. I thought it was pretty cool that they tried to put some thought, thats what counts, right? Just felt like sharing this and wanted see what other people think of this toy or had other similar christmas/birthday gifts.
If you have any Robot Heroes, it goes well with them. That (and it being $3 on clearance) are the two reasons I have one. Unless it is clothing that doesn't fit, or things like a wallet (where someone says they bought it but expect me to pick my own), I like to smile and keep it. It is the thought that counts for me, and at the end of the day, I am happy to get anything. If nothing else, you can always secretly donate it to Toys 4 Tots next year and pay it forward.
I'm in the same spot, I believe my mom bought my 3 of the Kre-o sets for Christmas. 1 of them I already have, it's the only one I wanted, Optimus, but I don't want any others... so now i'm torn trying to figure out what to do with them... I don't want to get rid of them, in case they want to see them put together one day.. but, honestly, I'm trying to get rid of stuff and i'm about to go through my collection in the next 3 days, and pull stuff out, because i'm running out of room... so.. I guess MISB it is for them.. idk?
Since you collect G1s mainly, I'd suggest doing what ScottyP did with his and paint it orange You can check the Feedback forum to see what others think about the toy. I think it rocks, personally
There's a handful of things I have that I have been given as gifts that I'd never buy on my own. I'd never sell them, a friend or family member took the time to buy me something that they knew pertained to an interest if mine and I appreciate that more than the gift itself. Edit: I guess I didn't really offer anything helpful there did I? Sorry! I'd put some Minibots or Season 3 guys around it (plenty of ships in season 3 that weren't 'Arks') or try your hand at painting it orange. It couldn't hurt!
I got a TF Universe 1.0 Breakdown as a gift a couple years ago. what made me keep it was: 1. My 9 year old niece picked it out. 2. She found a TF Universe 1.0 figure still on the shelf in a store. unless the gift is godawful, keep it. Honestly, even if it's not G1, you still have the ARK. that counts for something.
I got a dotm legion class bumblebee from somebody once. I kept it largely because it would seem rude to point and laugh saying 'legion class bumblebee!! Hahaha there's not a more mundane blah figure anywhere- hahaha!' I mean, people in the real world don't know what legion class is or know that bumblebee's are like fruitcake: better than nothing but absolutely dead last on any reasonable person's list.
I like the Ark. Don't have a lot of legend class figures, but still thought it was a cool thing to have. The plastic is very flimsy, but it looks good both as a ship and a base. I'd say keep it. Even though it's not part of the lines you collect, somebody did go out of his/her way to get you a gift that is actually pretty close. It's incredibly hard for non-fans to find a Transformers fan a gift And as has been pointed out, it still looks cool with small G1 toys. Painting it orange is actually a pretty cool idea as well, I like it!
Could always donate it to me. =) Or a charitable organization that collects toy donations for kids. Probably the latter.
I'd still put it on my shelf. Like other people say, you have an Ark now at least. What I do if someone buys me a Transformer is I put it on the shelf regardless of whether I like it or not. It means a lot to me that someone would take the time to try and find something I like. If its already a Transformer I own, I just switch them out and replace the one on the shelf with the one that was a gift.
