The actual point goes thusly. Does the great Peter Cullen enjoy delivering the lines with darker connotations more than he lets on? AoE is easily the darkest movie to date but it had Peter Cullen at the top of his game. Bar none, you can't find a better Optimus performance at all. Remember the KSI factory scene with Joshua? He seriously acted the fuck out of that scene!

"WE'RE NOT YOUR TECHNOLOGY!"

The other movies can't match that emotion and intensity. He did awesome in Prime, but still can't compare. Do I have to bring up Rescue Bots? He sounds like he was delivering those line under heavy sedation. I don't know what they did to make a voice actor of his caliber sound so dull and monotone?

I didn't see the problem with "WE ARE NOT YOUR TECHNOLOGY" I thought that was true to them moment, he was talking about his friends.

 

Which is why all Michael Bay's post 9/11 work has this, except for Transformers '07. Hell, he turned a f*cking movie about Pearl Harbor into an American revenge fantasy, for Christ's sake.

bad boys 2 would be his 1st post-9/11 film and they do indeed have a throwaway line about 9/11 in there.

Honestly, I don't think he likes the "kill this", "kill that" type of lines. But a serious Optimus, like in the KSI factory, I don't think he minds.

I wonder if he ever tried to ask the writers to change some of the lines because he didn't like them.

I love the darker Optimus, but I do think some lines could have been changed. For example in AOE, Optimus says something like (not exact quote obviously) "when I find the ones behind this they will die/be killed". That could've been changed to something like "when I find the ones behind this they will pay" or something just to cut out the "die/kill" part at the end of the sentence.

 

Peter may not like it but he had a job to do. Bay does direct the Transformer ADR too.

 

I don't think he does. I think he prefers playing something more akin to G1 or Prime Optimus Prime.

 

I don't think he has a problem with portraying a more emotional Optimus. He just doesn't like the "I'll kill you!" Or "We will kill them all", because he doesn't feel that's something Optimus would say. I am a staunch supporter of Movie Optimus, but we all know "Give me your face" was a big fuck up from the writers, though Peter seemed more amused than anything when asked about it. "It was aggressive, definitely aggressive... I mean, have you ever had your face pulled off??" And I am sure he was uncomfortable recording "I'll kill you" and "I'm going to kill them!" Peter is a sweet, kind man so that's no doubt a major factor in his being uncomfortable with recording those lines. Maybe stories Larry told him about his time in the service helped as well.

But the same point Peter always makes is that no matter what he's done, at the end of the day Optimus Prime is still Optimus Prime, even the more violent, human Movie Optimus. If that's what Peter says, why keep arguing about Movie Optimus?

I love Peter. He's a very sweet, kind man who thinks before he speaks and he's just so genuine, humble, and takes his job as an actor seriously. I would love to meet him, and hopefully I get to one day.
