A murderer is violating someone else's right to exist. It is the opposite of freedom. Therefore yes, they need to be locked away.

You sir nailed it. The Decepticons wish to conquer and strip others of their freedom. That's why Optimus Prime is there.

I'm going to join the chorus of Digilaut, NeverDoubt, MasterZero, and Autovolt in saying that the Decepticons' freedom to act ends when they start hurting people. I'd also like to add that not only are you (you being the generic address form) free to act, you are also free to suffer the consequences of your actions. After all, what's the point of choice, of free will, if it has no meaningful consequences?

basically, freedom of choice, not freedom from the consequences of those choices.

I always thought this was what it meant.

Then again, freedom is a concept, and a very layered concept with increasingly abstract implications.

The freedom of the Decepticons to do what they please would eliminate the freedom of any species they encounter. He would be a hypocrite either way to state that. So he chooses to impose on fewer beings

Optimus knows that freedom costs a $1.05, we're still safe.
