I wonder how the movie will deal with Mikaela's sudden departure. Her character arc, though kinda shallow, really made it feel like she and Sam were going to tie the knot in TF3. I'm gathering that opinion from the "white dress & bouquet scene" and the "Sam and Mikaela won't say 'I love you' until after Sam dies" in ROTF. It felt very much like their relationship was growing. Even Bumblebee was protective of Sam's and Mikaela's relationship.

How do you think her absence will be explained away in TF3? Do you think they'll have a "Ron & Judy console Sam" scene? Do you think there'll be two seconds of dialogue just saying "Mikaela pissed off the wrong people and now she's dead. Move on with your lives."? Do you think they'll even take up screentime talking about her?

I'll bet she'll be brought up in a conversation sam has with his parents. I think she'll just be mentioned...like "it didn't work" kind of thing...they should touch on it but I hope they don't dwell too long...

Honestly, I don't give a rats ass so long as they gloss over the fact that Sam and Mikaela broke up. Seriously, WTF do people care? They complain the movies waste too much time with humans, then simultaneously complain about them not keeping a throw away girlfriend character/explaining a breakup. All that should be said is that Sam's moved on from his breakup with Mikaela.

I started the thread after Nelson at ShootfortheEdit referred to her as "Carly", and it wasn't because she was getting her pic taken on "Carly Street."

As for why I care, it's because I go to movies for the human element; emotion, depth, character, etc. That's right. Some people saw Transformers for the characters, which is why, in many minds, TF2 was such a giant eff-up. For me one of the best parts of TF1 was seeing this nerdy, unremarkable kid getting the girl of his dreams. Granted their "love story" was shallow, and pretty cookie cutter. But I still enjoyed it.

In TF2, I wasn't really caring about their relationship, mostly due to cliched lines and wooden acting, but in the writing you can see that their relationship was ascending toward something. And at the end of TF2, the two seemed pretty inseparable, having gone through a lot together.. I hope they've come up with a satisfying, written reason for why their relationship fell apart, and it isn't just, "Eh, Mikaela was a real bitch."

 

^^ Good for you. I, however, don't need the formulaic retelling of yet ANOTHER nerd gets the girl story, with giant robots in the background. I can watch I Love You Beth Cooper or any number of other elements for that. How could they even do that again in the second movie? The first ended with them together, and if anything was shown in movie, it was his struggle to keep normal relationships during a robot civil war.

Not to mention that most breakups are over relatively trivial things... why should Sam's story be any different? Why does it deserve more than 5 minutes? Yeah let's waste another 45 minutes to an hour on romance in an action movie. I guess to me , going to see an action movie about giant bots and romantic comedy should not be together. Pick one style and focus on and stick to it, and blend some other elements. TF3 looks to be just what you want tho, another nerd gets the girl tale. I just hope they keep the action to the scale of ROTF, minus the lull in the middle for the McGuffin quest.

 

Mikaela has been too integral to the TF franchise to just ignore her totally. I'd expect at least a few minutes dedicated to explaining why she was gone, and in a 2.5 hour long film, I can handle that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Carly ends up saying something like 'wow, your ex put up with this sort of craziness?' at some point.

 

integral? I dont recall one scene thats needed her in it.

Honestly she was a poor character and I hope they just write her off with a phone call or a dear John letter right at the start

You should also know that not even the greatest of love stands the test of time. People are married for YEARS !!!!!!!! and end up getting a divorce THAT is real life.... Not movies my friend...

 

I'm standing by my theory that one of the Autobots will ask where Mikaela is and Sam will answer with a "we broke up! These things... happen..."

just by being Sam's GF, Mikaela is a target for the Con's....heck anyone Sam knows is a target for them.... and having her just wander off after a break up doesn't work for me.

Since Fox parted ways with the movies, i've thought a quick scene with Sam standing over a grave with her name on would be a perfect way of getting it over and done with quickly and simply....

How about have Prime include a bit where he states 'the war has cost us much' in his opening monologue and have that play over a couple of second scene of Sam standing over Mikaela's grave...
