The Autobots Useless thread could me thinking...do you think he directed the wrong franchise. I'd hate to say but he should have done GI Joe. I mean it's all about a human military that beats the ever loving crap out of terrorists. It's everything that his Transformers is minus the alien robots. I mean could Rise of Cobra have been any worse? Well what do you think?

Good? Bad? The Lesser of Two Evils.

It would be interesting, if only to see how the Joe fans react to our controversial explosive friend ;)

    He basically did with NEST.

    But I voted 'yes'.

Is this in a fictional universe where it was basically "one or the other"? Like, Bay would EITHER make Transformers or Joe? Not both? If so, I would pick him to do Joe over Transformers.

This is an interesting concept though. Of all of the directors out there, you'd think Bay would've been the first to jump at the chance of directing a Joe film. "Military and America F**K YEAH!, terrorists, explosions, military, more explosions? I'm in!" You pretty much nailed why he'd seem like a good choice - on paper, that is.

I was honestly expecting Bay to be attached to RoC as some form of producer, based on the success of Transformers, similar to the situation now with Nolan and Man of Steel. He would've made the Joes a much more "reality-based" military force, as opposed to going for the more fantastical elements that Sommers incorporated. Probably have more photorealistic visual effects, along with more practical effects/less CGI. Recast Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje with Michael Clarke Duncan, Dennis Quaid with Ed Harris and Kevin J. O'Connor with Steve Buscemi and the cast would be set. :lol

Now, after all of that, I still don't think that just because Bay seems like a good fit for the material that it'd be "good" movie. It'd probably be on par with Sommers' RoC in terms of overall quality, but it'd still be a mess of a dumb, fun, action movie. For a lot of people, it'd be awful no matter what he did. He either ruins Transformers or he ruins G.I. Joe. Lose/lose.

Yes. As others has said, he turned Autobots VS Decepticons into America VS generic alien invaders. While I'm not sure if it would be fair to dump him on the Joes, if someone had to have Bay, he'd do better with G.I.Joe.

It's more likely that he'll give more screen time for the Joes and Cobras than he does for the Autobots and Decepticons.

No, he would have, he would also upgrade them to create explosions behind them as they ran.

You can, daitarn. Just watch Sommers' G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. :)

Or how about upgrade them to run* on explosions?

*Can be used as both a fuel source for the suit or actually physically running on explosions.

In a lot of ways, it might have been a move that would have played to his strengths even more, but how it would have differed from what we expect "GI Joe" to be is pretty hard to nail down.

On the one hand, he wouldn't have the burden of so many CGI characters. On the other hand I expect him to do as much research as he did for Transformers, lol.

Yeah, he'd probably make Ripcord an African-American, give Snake-Eyes lips, make a nearly unrecognizable Cobra Commander, and completely change the Baroness.

    Wait.

    :p

Nolan, Singer, Bay, Favreau, Whedon, Burton, Webb. It's their version - their vision of franchises that have lasted several decades. If I wanted everything to be a carbon-copy of everything else in the franchise for the last bajilion years, I'd buy the first comic book/tv show/toy and be done with it forever. But that's not how franchises like this work. ;)  If the DIRECTORS and PRODUCERS and WRITERS want to change the colour of a character, or their backstory, or their design, what say do we have? It's their movie, not ours. Heck, most of the time, the "changes" that we complain about aren't even warranted, or if they are, then we hold a horrible double-standard: changes are okay in X but god forbid they have changes in Y.

I accept changes when they're well written and have research behind them.

But who or what is to say what all does or doesn't have research behind them or is "well written"? 99% of the changes made are either dictated by the needs of the story/plot or merely creative choices by the director since, well, it's their movie. Transformers, X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, Avengers, they all have their changes.

It's all subjective. And that's what I'm trying to get at; sometimes changes are deemed acceptable by each. individual. fan, and sometimes the changes aren't accepted by each. individual. fan. We aren't in charge of these movies. Professionals are. We have to deal with the results.
