I've just completed my Alt/BT/KP/BTA collection. I choose not to get the color duped character doubles. IE Red Jazz, Blue Prowl, KP Rodimus (I actually would've proffered KP Rodimus), Clear Mirage, and the 3 other numbered versions of Smokescreen.

What are your feelings on this? Do you buy dupes of the same character (not including characters who are repaints like the seekers)? If so why? Non dupe collectors give your input too.

 

It depends on a lot of things, but generally, no. The exceptions I've made include the Legends class figures, dragons (Scourge/ Cryoscourge, RID Megatron/ Galvatron), and the SWTFs (Jedi Starfighter Anakin and Vader, and the WM exclusive 2-pack). I got the Hasbro Galaxy Force Optimus Prime for $5, but otherwise wouldn't have bought it. My nearly complete dragon collection, however, is begging for a Luck Draw Flame Convoy. Most of the time, though, I don't see a good reason.

The only one I think you should've gotten that you didn't was Rodimus. He's a different character than Mirage. Not just Mirage in another color like the others you listed.

 

If its a slight or minor variation in color scheme, no. The first wave of Classics come to mind to compare between Japan and US. Grimlock's chrome parts, no. For major or totally different color schemes like classics Astrotrain. White US version vs. Anime grey version or even Megatron, then yes. With the exception for expensive Lucky draws and some japanese exclusives, I try to collect every repaint. Yes, I'm a completist.

I actually prefer that repaints are somebody else, and not Joe with a new paint job.

 

No, if a character comes in multiple colors I choose the one I like most. I don't have the funds to buy duplicates (even when considered different characters)

Yes, but it's limited. Example would be the red/yellow Bumblebee/Cliffjumpers. I have all 4.  

 

Robotmasters SW and TC are the only ones I have doubles of. I cant think of any mold I'd want two of except MP Prime if only to have a backup.

 

Yup. I try to pick up every variation I can. A collection just isn't complete to me without all of the variations.

When I say I've complete the ALT/BTA/BT/KP line, I have one of each character and every character released. So I have Alt Mirage, and Alt Rodimus, but not the KP Rodimus.

I guess I should clear this up. When I say character color Dupes I mean the same character in a different color scheme. For example BT-06 Tracks comes in yellow and blue, or BT-27 Rodimus comes with flames, but KP Rodimus has rally stripes.

 

I don't consider those repaints. They are separate characters with different personalities that share the same mold. The yellow and blue Tracks are what I would consider repaints. What does bother me is when they take this to far. For as awesome as the ALT/BT Line is there are way to many characters sharing molds. I understand why the did it with this series because the molds are licensed and they need to recoup that cost. But they did go a little to far, 12 molds for 30 characters, and 38 toys including re-paints!

 

I won't buy a duplicate of a character in another color. I have no problem buying the same mold if it's a different character, but the same charater in another (usually ugly) color is just a no for me. A few tempted me here and there, like BT clear mirage, but I prefer to put my money on different character rather than duplicate of the same. And with the price this one goes anyway I'll never get it now, so it's a good thing

Depends on the mold. If it's a mold I like, then no matter how ugly the deco is I'll buy it!
