I currently have 2 Ikea Detolf display cabinets. The shelves are crammed full of Masterpieces, Alternators, Classics, and a few neat figures from other lines (AEC, Titianium 6", Movie, ROTF). Since my Amazon Unicron arrived the other day, I ordered a new Detolf from a local Ikea dealer (Ikea doesn't have a store in my country, so we have to go through intermediaries who import their stuff). I started planning the future shelf arrangement and it turns out that, despite the fact that I'm getting four new shelves worth of space, I will only be able to fit Unicron and a handful of other new figures in the cabinet! Sure, the existing figures will have more room and will look nicer, but man... I have 4-5 boxes full of TFs sitting in my closet that I'm itching to put on display. And it looks like that won't be happening until my fourth Detolf... Does anyone else have this same problem?
i couldn't display everything in detolfs, not enough shelf space to floor space ratio, maybe try that adding shelves to detolfs mod that was on here a month or two ago
If you have access to Ikea you can also get Billy bookshelves. They have a variety of options as well for glass doors. The nice thing about these is that they are wider, and offer adjustable shelving (without modifying). They still aren't perfect, but offer a nice alternative.
^ This. I use two Billy's in my collection, offers plenty of space and uses the entire length of floor to ceiling in my office. IMHO, Detolf's are great if you display it in the middle of a room for 360 viewing ... but if they're against the wall might as well go for a Billy with glass Morebo doors (remove interior cardboard siding)
I started out with Detolfs too but those quickly ran out of space. Got some other shelves/display cupboards but those didn't work either. Had to customise my own display cabinet when I moved into my new place a few years ago. That solved the problem then...and it has ran out of space yet again....
Don't make the mistake of overcrowding your bots, if there isn't enough space to display them all, then there simply isn't enough space. Go for the ones you want to display most, by character or theme. If you cram as much as you can up there it'll most likely degenerate into a multicoloured mess. Be brutal with who makes the cut on your shelf! It'll look better for it in the long run, trust me!
Hahah, my walker's sitting on my desk right now because it's either that or the floor, the latter of which might involve him getting tripped over at night.
My collection room is a clusterf-bomb right now. The Detolf shelves just don't seem to cut it for me (as nice as they look). They are just too small to get a nice clean display with as extensive as lines such as classics have gotten. I would make a shift to a custom cabinet, or look for a business that is going out of business (not sure how prevalent that is in Serbia) that may have display cases for sale. I wish I had jumped on some when Hollywood video went out of business here. For me, glass shelving is a nice touch, but can be pricey. It may also depend how your carpentry skills are and what your budget is. I would definately look at something more permanent and custom to the space that you have.
I use a detolf and while there are space issues, I gave up on having everybody in action poses, and also had about 100 custome risers made at 1", 2", and 3" intervals. That way I was able to squeeze more in and keep total visibility for all figures. For example with my 2010 Unicron I have him plus 9 deluxes in the same cube.
