On the one hand, I could see this working - play up the contrast between the steampunk (for the lack of a better descriptor for the aesthetic of the sub) and the ancient Atlanteans and it could look pretty cool.

On the other...Atlantis was considered a failure for Disney. Why are they going to remake a failure that might largely just follow the same story as the original?

Ah, Disney's totally original, 'we totally did not steal this story' movie.

I watched it about the time this got mentioned with another film that Disney Plus is live-actioning. I was unimpressed with it. I found the majority of characters to be unlikable, to the point yawning. This thing has nothing on Nadia. It's like Nadia, but less good.

With that said, I'd be curious to see a remake, since I see that there is so much room for improvement with it. Maybe even, make it more original than the 'original'? Dare I say? That'd I'd be interested in. But, a straight up remake, nah. I'm done with those.

I'd rather have a Nadia movie. The writing and even animation was better.

I think a Nadia movie would be great, made by anyone other than Disney.

Also, now I have a new reason to hate Shinji. Added to the zillions of other reasons I already hate that bastard.

Yea, I really like Nadia, gorgeous piece of animation. Wonderful characters. I have yet to actually finish the thing, but I have gotten fairly far into it. It's fantastic, unlike the boring Disney version.

I say it needs to star John Sheppard, Ronin Dex, Tayla & Rodney McKay. The BEST Atlantis.

Huh, I'd never heard of this Nadia thing but yeah, it looks like the Lion King/Kimba rip off situation all over again. And I actually liked Atlantis so I'll need to check out Nadia at some point.

Rip open the shirt of a girl he was massively crushing on while she was on a hospital gurney, exposing her chest, and promptly wank off while looking at them.

Among other things during Evangelion's run.

Hmm. That’s true, it wasn’t a hit at the box office. Everything they’ve done for their remakes was based on a commercial success so far. Maybe they’re willing to take a chance on something that has a cult internet following? Like Atlantis isn’t as iconic or embedded in the public mind like The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast, but there’s still plenty of people who grew up in the 2000’s who are familiar with it. The fact that it lives on through meme culture to an extent proves that it’s there. Some people would remember it. Maybe they’re considering that as enough ammo to make a bit of money? I remember going into Aladdin, Iger even admitted there was a chance that it wouldn’t do too hot financially, so in a non-COVID world they might be willing to do it.

I mean, I liked the movie, but is it wrong for me to say Disney's really scraping the bottom of the barrel for these Live-action remakes now?

Actually, I've said from go that this movie should have been live-action, to begin with. Honestly, live-action always felt like a better fit for the story that was being presented. Done right this could end up being pretty amazing.

Geez, what shitty things didn't sad little emo boy (that was basically Anno working through his depression) do? I mean... one of the worst was him jacking it to an unconscious Asuka in the hospital (and no... him admitting how fucked up he was for doing it immediately afterward doesn't make it better)... not to mention he's really the one responsible for Toji being injured. If he'd just stepped up to the plate and fought the angel possessed unite his father wouldn't have given the order to use the dummy system and the capsule wouldn't have been crushed... he could have pulled the damned thing out and saved his friend. But, no, he was too busy being little emo whiny bitch boy once he found out Toji was the pilot. Honestly, I could go on, but I hate Evangelion and this isn't the thread for discussing just how much Evangelion, Shinji, and pretty much everything about it isn't as great as people try to make it out to be.

Turns out the Lion King/Kimba thing is way overblown:

I wouldn't be surprised if the Nadia/Atlantis stuff is, too.

As to the remake, I know Atlantis didn't make a ton of money for Disney, but it's one of their more interesting offerings. I'd love to see them take another swing at it with Ryan Reynolds.

Get Terry Crews as Sweet, Joshua Sweet. Michelle Rodriguez as Audrey Ramirez. Helen Mirren as... the old lady. Charlize Theron as Helga. John Turturro as dynamite guy (hey look! I built a bridge). John Mahoney would’ve been great reprising the role in live action if he was still around.

Morgan Freeman would be cool as the king.

I hope Reynolds has been cast to play 40 year old teenager Milo. I can't wait.

Also about the ripoff thing, if the roles were reversed, and someone made a lion movie about a character named Zimba, and that was the only thing they did, everything else was different, Disney would sue them to oblivion. Just saying.

The name Kimba, to Simba, really is all you need to be a ripoff. Everything else could be entirely different. And, you are still ripping them off.

So that means if the roles were reversed for this film here:

And, these were the ONLY differences between the two. And, Nadia came out afterwards, Disney would consider it infringing upon their copyright, and sue them into oblivion too.

So, if Disney would count this as ripping themselves off, we get to count these superficial things as Disney ripping off Kimba, and Nadia. As, these things goes both ways.
