My brother had this Need for Speed game on my computer and I uninstalled it but there is this huge 1 gig file on my desktop I attempt to delete but it just won't let me and says its in use but I can't figure how what it is in use by or how to get rid of it. Any help?
So is safe mode, if you don't know how to use DOS. If safe mode doesn't work, then go online and learn some of the commands for navigating DOS.
ahh....so it was a not so legal copy. Those can be a pain to get rid of from what I've heard. Try safemode first. Should work. Hold down F8 on a boot.
On your taskbar, there should be an icon for either Daemon tools or Alcohol 120%. Click on it and select unmount all drives. That should clear the file up for deletion
I'd try a normal computer restart first. Then try the safemode thing if that doesn't work. I get that lots, and a restart always fixes it.
Yeah, but it could be he was using a program like Daemon tools or Alcohol to mount a virtual drive that autostarts on startup and the .mdf file that he pirated somehow associates itself with that and won't allow deletion. I'd look for that icon in the system tray, could be as easy as shutting it down.
Oh God, don't go delving into the Registry if you can help it. Not that long ago, I have Spybot S&D installed, which was running its monitor bit. It was preventing any registry changes, and for some reason the notification window was all wrong, so all I could do was deny any changes. After a couple of months of Registry butchering my PC decided finally to not boot up, except in safe mode. I needed to nuke my machine and I still haven't got half my programs back on. Sweet ever since though.
You know a Linux CD might help with his problem. If he gets frustrated at not being able to delete the file he can always throw the CD at the wall. Plus it doubles as a handy coaster.
I looked on my computer and found that program Daemon tools so I uninstalled it and it let me delete it fine. Thanks!
