It was an exploration of PTSD. It wasn't in continuity, so who gives a fuck if Adam Strange died? It was a good stand alone story (and he didn't give up his child to the aliens, he gave up all of Earth in a bargain to save his child). Not nearly as good as Mister Miracle, but still. The current Human Target series, I'm a little less wild about, since it seems like a pretty blatant ripoff of the classic noir movie (and its 1980s remake) D.O.A. So I feel like I already know exactly how it's going to go and who is behind the mystery.
