It was an exploration of PTSD. It wasn't in continuity, so who gives a fuck if Adam Strange died? It was a good stand alone story (and he didn't give up his child to the aliens, he gave up all of Earth in a bargain to save his child). Not nearly as good as Mister Miracle, but still. The current Human Target series, I'm a little less wild about, since it seems like a pretty blatant ripoff of the classic noir movie (and its 1980s remake) D.O.A. So I feel like I already know exactly how it's going to go and who is behind the mystery.

Strange Adventures was terrible. It was an illogical story. Why would the Pykkts agree to let Strange slaughter lots of their soldiers, for example, so Earth wouldn't think he sold them out when the Pykkts invade Earth? They gave up the assured, easy conquest of Rann for a chance to invade Earth, a planet full of superheroes, that would with a doubt be much harder to conqier? How stupid are the Pykkts, anyway? King pulls this garbage every time he writes a series. He has nothing new to say, he writes variations on the same "broken character" story over and over again. Mr. Miracle was just as bad. Thank goodness most of his stuff is out of continuity. Look what he did to Wally West and the lengths they had to go to in order to clean up the mess he made.

Tom King is that kid you knew back in the day who came over broke some of your favorite toys and then left leaving others to clean up their mess and deal with the emotional fall out of all the things he broke.
Yeah Wally is just starting to get back on track after King screwed him up. I hated that story and so did many others.

I think that was the final event mini-series I bought from DC alongside "Doomsday Clock", which I think helped get floppies off my budget. Funny part is I really loved his writing for Gnarrk before he killed him off. I thought Doomsday Clock was fun, but the delays probably lessened it's punch since it wasn't going to change continuity as much as it was probably planned since other DC projects got highlighted in the meantime. I did love the further world building in it's supplemental pages.

Last issue of Robins came out.
As out of main continuity as it is, I actually really like the story of Anita Jean and the Escape Artist. The one before Dick, the child Bruce failed to save. Just a girl who crossed a line, when Bruce was unprepared to grapple with trying to understand and help her rather than rage at and admonish her. She's not absolved of what she became, no, she's still responsible for being the villain in the present, but if Bruce had been better...I wouldn't mind her being inducted into the mainstream universe at some point, or her story being adapted.

A glimpse at why Bruce tries so hard to be there for his wards, why he takes it so hard when he fails them. She's not necessary for that, no, it's fairly obvious without her existence why Bruce would be so devastated by it when he fails any of his children, but it adds an interesting layer to his line of thinking to me.

It's non-canon, so they shouldn't worry about it, but they'll do it anyway and to be honest DC hasn't done anything good with Guy Gardner since turning him into a Red Lantern.

Tom King isn't entirely responsible for that, because he didn't want it to be a murder mystery, but a story about heroes going to therapy and dealing with their problems and the stress of their jobs.

Most of Tom King stories don't fit in a mainstream universe, which is why they let him do miniseries that to be honesty puts an obscure character, like Mister Miracle and Adam Strange back in the spotlight whether you like it or not.

It's been far too long since I've seen that image. Still hilarious.

From those concepts, I like the Hawkman, Green Lantern Conspiracy, Capt Carrot and Darkseid and Cyborg most.

The Captain Carrot one at least sounds fun for a mini-series. Also, more proof Peter David is just pure awesome (I grew up reading several of his Star Trek novels, "Q-Squared" being my favorite).

I can't say any of them appeal to me. I just want a good Green Lantern book again.

Peter David is a nice guy. I see him at Dragoncon almost every year, he has some great panels from time to time where he reads chapters from one of his upcoming books or comics. He has some interesting stories from his time at marvel. Lots of time you hear about him pitching these great ideas at marvel and they turn him down.

Also the thing to remember is during the contest he made Captain Marvel insane.....and it still sold better.

I think this is the future of comics; you'll only get new stuff if you vote for it.

If this is the future of comics it's truly a doomed industry.

Like you wouldn't love it if it was and the industry wouldn't be doomed, just become more niche.

It was already niche, comics were never mainstream even after the movies took off, the problem is it has become even more narrow over the years. They can't get much more niche than they are now. That is why manga is doing so much better. They are too focused on a appealing small audience, many of which don't even appear to be comic readers.

That PAD Captain Marvel book (both series) is one of the very best things Marvel was publishing during that era. It's amazing and depressing to me how it had to struggle to survive. I was thinking about this the other day, and I realized it's one of the reasons I've been enjoying the Naomi book, along with Far Sector. Jamal Campbell's art is reminiscent to me of ChrisCross, whose work I really miss.
