Too many to count at this point, which is why I think this announcement hasn't really been met with positive response from a lot of readers. Honestly, at this point, it feels like filler? Like the past few months of stories feel like they're just burning the stuff from the 5G proposal which they claimed they werent going to do, but seems to have done on a letter degree, all while they figure out what to do next, since they also lost a bunch of their key writers, or in the case of Johns, not really using him much

I think the closest comparison I can think of is how Marvel just basically let the X-Men team do a bunch of bad storylines like that Age of X-Man and allow Matt Rosenberg to kill of a few long time characters while they just waited for Hickman's run.

Even the opening description of "to celebrate the 'Death of Superman'" blurb makes it seem more like a gimmick than usual, like a 1-2 issue arc than a major event.

Announcing a character's death as some big event like this just takes any shock or impact out of it for me.

I hope it epically backfires on DC. Whatever D-lister they hope to become everyone's hero turns into fans begin hating these characters for replacing the 'real' stars. Sales tank and they retcon the deaths way sooner then they planned in a desperate bid to get back at least close to what was selling before.

Sales have already been tanking for Jon Kent as superman if that is any indication.

Now we know why Naomi seems safe and sound, this article states they're going to change the Justice League line-up right before the event to only feature classic Leaguers (Supes, Diana, Bats, Aquaman, John Stewart, Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Zantanna)

That reminds me, they could always use the idea from Joe Kelly's Justice League run during the "Obsidian Age" arc where the current League seemed lost, so it turned out there was a contingency Justice League planned in such an event led by Nightwing (Nightwing's team consisted of himself, Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, Firestorm, Ray Palmer, Faith, Jason Blood, and a reformed Major Disaster)

    Wait, really? Let's see and--

    (*sees it's Bounding into Comics*)

Nope. Nope nope nope nope NOOOOOPE. Heard that those guys are nothing but trouble.

    PASS.

Am I weird for wanting this to be what starts a series of JL-adjacent titles like a relaunch of Young Justice so it can be written by literally anyone but Bendis?

I know she wasn’t really doing it for me, but now I wonder what’s going to happen to Naomi. Probably gonna get dumped in comic book limbo?

OMG, you just reminded me of that steaming pile of horseshit Uncanny X-men run sandwiched between the abysmal Age of X-Man and the awesome House/Powers of X.

Don't have to like the site just look at the numbers though

the first book of Superman: Son of Kal-El only sold 68,800 issues back in July when it first debuted. That was good for the 17th best selling comic of the month.

The most recent data compiled by Comichron reveals that the book’s third issue only sold 34,000 copies in September. That was good for the 77th best selling comic of the month.

That 68,800 number for the first issue is even worse when you compare it to previous Superman #1 issues. When the series was rebooted when Brian Michael Bendis took over the title back in 2018 with a new Supeman #1, it sold 133,700 copies.

In June 2016, when DC relaunched their entire line with DC Rebirth, Superman Rebirth #1 sold 118,434 copies and Superman #1 sold 105,380 copies.

As the math shows it sold less than Clark as superman and by the third issue half the audience had stopped reading it.

Figured you’d say something. Yeah you keep presenting those as the industry slowly goes away. IDW’s days are likely numbered, Dark Horse is trying to sell its self and DC and Marvel are selling less than they did 5 years ago. Comic stores and bookstores are going out of business. But you keep claiming nothing is happening. I’m bored with this game you play every time I post in this thread.

I know I’m a bit late to the whole “meaning of death in comic books” topic, but for me, I too agree that it as a concept isn’t that meaningful in comics, especially for DC Comics and Marvel Comics, who value their characters too much to let them die permanently. The last time I was wondering whether a character had actually stayed dead was Jean Grey, when I read Endsong, and she never fully returned until Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey.

For me now, whenever DC or Marvel kill a character, I have three factors to consider:
    1. Did the character(s) have a meaningful death?
    2. Did the character(s) death help progress the lore/story?
    3. Was the character(s) return meaningful?
The last two notable characters who died in DC Comics as far as I am aware is Deadshot and Alfred Pennyworth.

Deadshot’s death in Tom Taylor’s Suicide Squad run was meaningful, in the sense that now escalated the risk of anyone potentially dying in the team. It did process the story, as his daughter did want to honour his memory, and took up the name Liveshot, but this idea ultimately when nowhere. And his return on Task Force Z was unexpected, though I’ve not read it to see if it’s impactful enough.

Alfred’s death in Tom King’s Batman run always felt weird to me, given how it seems that he just volunteered to sacrifice himself so Bane could no longer hold him as hostage. It did have an impact however, especially to Batman (who lives all alone now) and Nightwing (who named a charity foundation after him). He did return in Joker Wars, where he was subsequently killed again, and Dark Knights: Death Metal but hasn’t been seen since.

For me, I am admittedly somewhat interested in how the Justice League is going to be killed how, especially if it turns out their death is actually them ending up in Multiverse 2, and how they tackle the void following their absence, but we all know they would never kill them permanently, so I doesn’t have the same impact on us as would have on new readers.

It would be interesting if they decided to put other titles on hiatus to emphasise the death of the Justice League, but they will unlikely do this, because it then needlessly affects them, as they are all taking place at different timelines, and are more self-contained.

    Sorry. :(
But really, given how Naomi isn't seen nor acknowledged so far, should we expect her to be primed for comic book limbo soon?

Well they aren’t likely to kill her and I think her comic has season 2 mini series going or something. But based on the lower ratings of her show, they may not try promoting it as much. It’s getting around half as much as Lois and Superman. CW ratings have been down all around mostly.
