US Dad makes son smash Xbox with hammer as punishment for bad grades | Daily Mail Online
Sorry if this has been posted, but that's a great way to help out your child and waste money at the same time.

Obviously there is a lot that we don't know about the situation. How long did dad know about the poor grades? Was the kid given an ultimatum before? What did the dad do to help the kid improve?

But if a kid is told that their grades aren't up to snuff, and blow it off, sometimes extreme measures are in order. If that's the case here, then, I fully support the decision of he father to destroy the game systems.

Could've sold the system and games and bought something more useful with it, like private tutoring lessons.

kid gets bad grades. dad makes him destroy a xbox 360 and xbox one.

how about this: dad drives through a red light, gets his car crushed into a cube.

sounds fair? i like to think so.

why destroy not one but 2 expensive video games systems when it is easier and better to take the systems away and give them back when the kid's grades improve?

I dunno whether to laugh or roll eyes after reading that.

    Really? Really?!

That could been a better alternative.

Yeah, there's definitely more at work here than what we're being told. Enough that I'd have to give the kid the benefit of the doubt. Dad here too may be abusive and well, there's part of why your son is doing poorly. Imagine having an abusive Dad and having to come home to that every day after school (which may suck just as bad). The kid may be playing video games because for those brief moments, they offer him an escape from his real world hell and make him feel in control. If Dad here was SMART, he'd take the games away and not just destroy hundreds of dollars worth of technology. This shit's gonna be friggin' seared into his kid's brain now. If the kid does improve his grades for the rest of his life and use his education to earn a great job and make a good living then he'd probably thank his Dad. If not, then he's going to look back on this moment every day and spit on his father's grave, hating him forever and possibly hating himself.

Also, getting good grades is HARD work. I know from myself that good grades ARE tough to get even if you do bust your ass for them. You may try your damned hardest and still come up short. That can be super devastating and defeating for any kid growing up. It really wasn't until High School and College that I finally began to dominate my courses, and even then great effort was always required to the very end. I know in elementary, middle school, and high school that math was not my strong point, but I still tried really hard, tutors and all to get through it.

Other factors that will fuck with you as a kid include and amount of homework you're subjected to. I wasn't one of those kids who got to watch afternoon cartoons or go out and play because I was usually stuck doing assloads of home work each night from 4-9 or even later. Very rarely would I have time to go out and play with friends or even enjoy my toys and video games. Then you add in things like fellow students who are straight up ass holes whose only goal seem to be making your days suck and teachers who either couldn't give two shit or had favorites among their students. Not helpful at all.

So just because this kid is doing poor in school, doesn't mean he means to do so. I luckily have loving parents and a good upbringing but even then, getting good grades was HARD.

maybe it isn't his son. maybe it is his school. schools tend to be awful today.

Yeah. The story itself is still vague on the details. We don't know the father and the kid and people getting upset because the system was destroyed. Maybe the family can afford to purchase a replacement.

    That's too extreme.

I love how they never realize they just flushed all that money down the drain just to prove a point.

But what if that was the point - Don't focus on school, and your life gets flushed down the drain.

I'm ok with the dad making him smash it. What i have issue with is his attitude, swearing towards the kid, then posting it for all the world to see.

People are too focused on the monetary value and not on the point. Again, we don't know the father and the kid.

I'm thinking he should've taken the games away much earlier. That's what progress reports are for.
