That would necessitate a broader intelligence and a heartfelt interest in actually continuing to learn long beyond their shitty public high school's 12th-grade English and History classes.

Reading a fictional book loosely sprinkled with historical factoids just makes them feel smart, while they otherwise follow the latest fad diet, watch American Idol, read People, and listen to KRAP radio, all while unable to say, name or pick their Congressman out of a lineup.

Wow, Omnibus, I can't help but hear a very stodgy British accent when reading that post.
Out of curiosity, what radio would you consider to not be "KRAP". Wuite frankly that is the snobbiest post I have ever seen, with the least evidence to back it up.
And, for the record, I have never learned anything in English aside from how to pretend to give a damn and a few amusing side facts from the good teachers.

I actually thought his post reflected the average American's view on entertainment and intelligence quite well.

You haven't learned anything in English class? I honestly couldn't tell from the way you post. ;)

Yeah, but if you look a little deeper than surface facts, then you start running into the fact that the Bible as is is a fairly dodgily-translated piece of prose that has been hacked and slashed to pieces. Even if the original writing of the Bible was 100% factual, it's been re-written a number of times to bring it to english, to put the Roman Catholic slant on it (that cut a number of books out, supposedly including Mary Magdalene's), and eventually to give it a poetic twist (King James Bible) as well as being given political slants as and when appropriate. Hell, Genesis is plagarised from Sumerian beliefs, including the epic of Gilgamesh, and the main character in the New Testament still has no recorded confirmation of his existance anywhere, except in the Bible which at that time was pretty much oral tradition.

Going by your interpretation of the two books, I think anyone with half a brain and a passing interest, cynical and disillusioned or not, could find at least as much factual information in one book as they could in the other.

I understand the Da Vinci Code contains many biblical references, but please keep your opinions on the Bible away from this thread.

    Heh. Just great. More problems.
My bad. I've been working on a science fiction book and I hope I'm not copying.
Heh. Nowadays, if someone wants something original, it has to be plagerized.
Great. Now I have to loook back at all I've typed up.
Good thing it's still in progress.

I say then old bean, be sure to tune in next week on "Fact vs. Fiction" where I will impugn James Frey and Oprah Winfrey, as well as downright insult all those who bought the former's book at the latter's behest, with the most scathing diatribe reserved for the wankers who felt 'betrayed' when the truth (or rather, untruth) about the book was revealed.

Now then, I'm off to burn a fag before I go to the pub to get knackered. Good day.
