G1 Defensor's "Fireball Cannon" weapons, reimagined for Combiner Wars/Unite Warriors Defensor.

The weapons that came with CW Hot Spot aren't really substantial enough for Defensor, and the none of the limited upgrade options on the market worked for me, so I decided to make my own. I've designed a few simple "functional" pieces before, but this is my first "appearance" upgrade. I'm happy with how they turned out but would welcome any feedback!

The design is primarily inspired by the G1 weapons (referred to as "Fireball Cannons" in the tech specs), but I was also inspired by how C+ Customs updated the G1 design for their upgrade kit. I added a trigger with trigger guard, since I hadn't seen that on any other combiner weapons I'd seen and it seemed like a fun thing to try.

These are also compatible with 5mm Blast Effect parts from the War For Cybertron trilogy toy line! Pictured with parts from Siege Jetfire.

Designed in Tinkercad and printed on my Prusa i3 MK3.

Nice work! Bonus kudos for making them compatible with the blast effects.

I might make the Devastator foot lock for my CBB Yellow Devastator if I can figure out how much smaller to make it.

These are now available at Shapeways: Robots '78 by robots78 - Shapeways Shops

Right now I have them offered as pairs, for Defensor's traditional dual-wielding configuration. If anyone would like them offered as single pieces, let me know and I can upload them that way.

I'm very interested, but wondering if they'd work with Hot Spot uncombined too

They will if you use the universal version. The other versions have triggers that would get in the way, but the universal has plenty of space around the 5mm peg, so it should work fine in Hot Spot's hands.

Well that's a bit of a choice, I really like the look of the PE-trigger versions but I'd like them to be usable as Hot Spot too... I'll have to mull that one over. Thanks.

Yeah, personally I think they're not quite as cool without the triggers. I plan to use these guns for Defensor and keep using the stock Hot Spot guns for Hot Spot.

If you like, I could print a copy of the universal gun and show pics of it being held by the PE hands and by Hot Spot so you can see what that option looks like. I feel like these Defensor guns might be a little too large for Hot Spot so it would be interesting to see how it actually looks.

I appreciate the thought but I'd rather not trouble you with that. I think I'll put some money aside for the versions with triggers after having thought about it. Thanks still.

Thank you for making the STL files available! These look great! Did you really print these vertically? How did you keep them stable?

Thank you! There's enough support material required for the handle and other parts at the back of the gun, that there's enough of a contact area with the print bed to keep the part in place, at least on my printer. Here's what it looks like in my slicer:

    Screen Shot 2020-01-09 at 9.20.17 AM.png

I've printed around a dozen of these while developing the design and printing tests, and I only had one print fail by coming loose from the bed. I've tried printing Transformers guns both horizontally and vertically, and I found the prints looked a lot better when done vertically. If you have issues with the part coming loose when printing vertically, you could add a brim and that would probably take care of it. That's what I do when I print parts with a really small contact area.

I got mine home and had to bore out the gun to get the 3D blast effect to fit. I'll post a picture tonight if you want.

Yeah, I sized that hole to exactly 5mm. It's a tight fit on the ones I've printed but they go in with a little convincing. I figured too tight was better than too loose!

The Blast effect I use was also 3D printed from ABS, and normal blast effects are that soft rubbery stuff so there's that. Also my printer is not the best out there so some times a 5mm hole ends up being 4.8mm or 5.3mm.
