So once again, instead of a backstory film, its a prequel retelling that creates its own au for the original film events that take place after. Just like Maleficent.

The only major exception to that, as far as I know, was Doctor Morocco in Rescue Bots

That, and the very weird and unique exception of Palpatine in the Clone Wars, where Curry was brought in as the replacement for Ian Abercrombie after he unfortunately passed away, and then replaced by Ian McDiarmid himself starting with Rebels and onward.

Missus and I just watched this and we both genuinely enjoyed it. We kept our expectations low but ended up liking the costume design and musical soundtrack (wife was really into the punk rock scene when she was younger and I liked the choices in 60's-70's songs), to the set design and daresay, even the characterization of those involved.

In the end, we felt kinda ambivalent and even sorry for Cruella because in the film she has a Harvey Dent/Two-Face psychotic break where her split dominant personality (Cruella de Vil) takes over the passive personality (Estella Miller) she was forced to adopt in her younger years to fit in better with normal society. We kinda liked that explanation for her eventual cartoon villain turn later on in life.

We felt most sorry for Jasper as he's the most sympathetic character and basically acts as her conscience and emotional guidepost that she ignores and then comes back around to, again and again. I could see how his love of Estella eventually turns to absorbing emotional abuse at the hands of Cruella later on, even after he calls her out on her shabby treatment of himself and Horace.

Horace is played mostly for comedy relief but his character does have a soft spot. The true hero of this story is probably Wink, his eyepatch-wearing Chihuahua. We loved Wink.

The Baroness, the main villain and Cruella's rival, ending up revealed to be her real birth mother and responsible for the murder of Estella's adoptive mother, was eyeroll-y but someone had to be the bad guy and I think Emma Thompson really enjoyed her role here.

I don't think Disney means for anyone to emulate Cruella. Here, they try to give her the Harley Quinn treatment and she ends up being more of an anti-hero than anything else.

So the movie did its job, in my opinion, which was just to have fun and be entertaining. We haven't watched the original animated film in years and even forgot large parts of it and the characters involved, but I think this one can be enjoyed as its own thing.

All of this is true, lol. Also, I had to laugh a little when the credits rolled and a message about fighting animal cruelty popped up urging folks to please adopt a pet. At least this was a message we can get behind.

Saw this today and it was actually really good. Not perfect, as it dragged in a few scenes, but god damn did Stone do a fantastic job and they didn't try to redeem her at all.

It was nice to see a villain be an actual villain for once. I wish more movies had the balls to do that.

As someone who grew up in the 80s loving Mumm-Ra, Megatron, Galvatron, Mon-Star, Serpentor, Cy-Kill, Skeletor, Hordak, and Magmar, I don't see the issue here.

All the ones you mentioned typically lost at the end of every episode. They weren't the protagonists.

And? Sometimes villains should win. I still don't see the issue.

I genuinely never planned to watch this movie but I honestly enjoyed it a whole bunch. Emma Stone is seriously so great and kills it in the role

That's how it was for me. I got dragged to the theater, so to speak, but ended up really liking the movie. Stone was just incredible.

Both Emma Stone and Emma Thompson were great and really chewed every scene they were in. You could tell that they were having a blast with their roles. Thompson said in an interview that she felt like a teenager again seeing all the period clothes and sets because she actually grew up with it when she was younger.

Agreed. Their performances are also what made the movie so damn enjoyable.

I Finally watched this and actually really liked it! I had low expectations and high criticism going in, but the movie started off great and got even better as it went along, never loosing pace and keeping it interesting and evolving as the movie goes along.

Didn't expect the twist towards the end which was nice, and all the characters were really well done.

Only gripe I had were the cgi dogs, they stood out badly and that parachuting scene. Guh lol that was bad. But laughable bad, so it was actually one of my fav parts.

Music was great, costumes were eve greater. Very solid and enjoyable movie. Very different than anythijg else Disney has done.
