So I'm an urban explorer. I like to explore abandoned places. Anyways few years ago I came across this on an Urban Exploration website I frequented. The place is long gone, but I came across this picture in the gallery.

Holy cow, that is creepy. No contact with family, no speaking with the outside world, your drivers liscense and important documents have to be turned over to the director... *shudder*. Sounds like whoever ran that joint had a major control issue. To think I lived a few blocks from this place in the early 2000's. Any clue what wacky group frequented this building before it was abandoned?

    Wow, that's pretty weird.

Judge from the text font (the way it's written) that place was established in the 60s/early to mid 70s.

You can tell they're legit and totally not a cult because they write all their rules in a sci-fi star trekky font.

It's actually interesting because a lot of these "House Rules" are really, really cliche examples of how cults exert control over their followers. Rules 1-3 and 8 are examples of how a cult isolates it's members from the outside world, removing all support structures except for the cult, and making it easier to indoctrinate and make members fearful, resentful, or even hateful towards the outside world. Rules 3, 5-8 are examples of how cults make it difficult for members to leave and incapable of forming dissent, by controlling their property (and ability to function in the normal world after leaving) and their access to information regarding the outside world. Rules 5 and 10 are examples of a cult essentially leeching off the work or wealth of its members and simultaneously making them unable to survive outside the church (almost half of their pay must be donated to the church, the rest is "held by the director" and all ID and presumably financial cards are likely held by the church as well). This list basically is a checklist of "ARE YOU IN A CULT" signs.

Yeah. Has all the earmarks of a cult and not just some religious organization. I've been fascinated with the methodology of cults ever since one of my good friends from high school just up and disappeared, to find out many years later, she was shanghaied in the middle of the night by a pair of thugs hired by her parents and sent to a cult-like boarding school in Jamaica called Tranquility Bay. I showed this to her and she visibly shuddered because she said it was almost like the place she been at.

I know rehab is pricey, but a mandatory 30% of your income, and witholding the remainder from you pricey?

There are a lot of places that claim to be rehabs that use cult-like methods. Like the aforementioned Tranquility Bay in Jamaica. Or Straight Inc. Or CEDU.

LOL wowzers...i lived across that building since the early 90's........i do remember seein teh old school bus ....nxt to the buildin was a fire extinguisher supply building.......that area would get heavily flooded when it rained.
that whole area is nothing but woods and just flood land......now of course...the Dart rail runs through there...........but that area is still a mystery ........
across the street from that is bisbee street.......it curves n winds around a lil wooded area.....and in the middle of them woods was a perfectly circled area cleared of trees...and grounded with white rocks........alot of crazy stuff would happen there...........soon as the sun went down...we all knew better than to ride our bikes near.
a few yrs back the city turned that area into a walking/joggin park....
that place still creeps me out.

it's really scary how we can look at those rules now and see how obvious that this organisation whatever its exact nature is exploiting it's members yet loads of intelligent and well educated people fall into groups like this even today.

Usually people join a cult because they feel like an outsider. (Or something else entirely)

I can't stop seeing 10 as "If you received any income, 10% will go to titties", which makes me think this place ain't so bad.

There's probably a stupid Facebook 'Are You David Koresh?' test that's similar to this.
