I remember Lockdown's saying to Savoy when he gave the humans the seed:"One Seed for one Prime." So this somehow mean that he's been hunting Primes as well? So does this means all Primes are Knights? Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that Grimlock and the Dinobots are Primes. This could mean that Sentinel and other Primes are Knights as well
To be honest, I don't understand the whole Knight/Prime/Dinobots thing. It felt so tacked on. I dunno.
I wanna say they are saying there was a group of Knights, and Prime was once part of that group. It doesn't seem that Primes were the membership, but strong warriors, since the Dinobots are locked up with Prime as Knights, and he was the last one. Maybe there were others, but didn't survive. Who knows. But that still leaves so many holes, like why are there more swords than locked up Transformers, and the weapons so much smaller than them. And it's way to odd that this history would never be brought up. That Lockdown (being such a big threat) would never be brought up. That he didn't seem concerned with the whereabouts of the Dinobots. And Grimlock didn't seem to even know who he was. The list goes on.
Fanon wise I like to think that gold is Sentinel Prime's knight form if they kept the whole silver Knight Optimus Prime. Anyway Optimus being a Knight aka a space explorer does give a convinient explanation how he managed to escape the Fallen's purge of the Dynasty of Primes. Also according to Sam sentinel Prime once led a scientific expedition. Add that to Sentinel also escaping the purge and being Optimus' mentor its possible Sentinel is a Knight that commanded the Knight Temenos. My guess Sentinel Prime returned to Cybertron to rebuild civilization, leading to the rise of the Autobots. The Knights like the Dinobots are probably the Autobot equivalent of Seekers. Legendary warriors among the Autobot faction.
Dinobots are evidence that to be a Knight you don't need to be a Prime, Lockdown gave me the impression that the Knights are a rebel fraternity, not a superior race like the Primes. Sentinel and Optimus are new comers who as someone else said, just wanted to hide among the ranks of a Knight.
I don't think Primes and Knights are mutually exclusive. They seem to have separate functions. It seems to me that Prime is exclusively an Autobot-given title whereas the Knights date back prior to the Autobot/Decepticon split.
If so could that mean megs/galvatron is/was also a member of this brotherhood.....if so this could open a dinosized can of worms for the remaining autobots on earth!!?
Well Optimus did consider Megatron as a brother. Sentinel also called Ironhide and Bumblebee Autobot brothers meaning a brotherhood. Question is if Megatron was ever a member of the brotherhood of the Knights. Lockdown called Optimus the last Knight that does not mean the Dinobots and Optimus are the only Knights but they are the only one left alive. Remember in ROTF Optimus said whole generations were lost. While it is not canon to the films Evac is the last remaining Knight of Cybertron. Cause Megatron killed everyone in trap pretending for a truce. It is likely the Dinobots were also participants in the war like Jetfire was.
I don't think they participated in the war because they are on neither side. But interesting is the fact that Slug has an Autobot logo on his dino head.Hmmmm....
I think Lockdown mean that other Knights are captured but not dead. Otherwise, why prisoners were needed alive for him? It's great idea that Knights and Primes are not the same. But exactly Prime title appear from ancient times before Autobot/Decepticon war. And we know almost nothing about Knight title. Who gave this title? What was the Knight's mission? If it's given by Creators why Transformers so little know about them? And it's true Sentinel was like to Knight too! What about Jetfire?
Not all Knights are alive. Not only because of the passage of time but because there is war going on with energon shortage to boot. Lockdown has been hunting down the Dinobots for centuries because they are the only ones left besides Optimus. The Knights are really old do believe all of them survived? Note in DOTM Sentinel Prime calls Optimus a young warrior even if he is 12,000 years old. There is a likelihood the Dinobots are direct creations of the Creators and given their form's inspiration probably very old that Optimus has to talk ancient Cybertronian.
So, trying to make sense of this poorly put together plot; I can agree the Knights and Primes weren't the same grouping, and the Knights just happened to have a few Prime's in it (we can confirm at least Optimus' membership). The Dinobots I believe were not only Knights (obvious this was the intention with their medieval armor inspired designs), but also even more special, being "ancient warriors", who are without a doubt the strongest of the Knights, and maybe the Transformers altogether (at the time).
