What about Transformers has left you genuinely confused?

To this day, I've never sorted out G1 Darkwing(d) and Dreadwind(g)

What gender the IDW writers want to portray Tailgate. They use male pronouns yet they keep putting in more and more things to Tailgate being more feminine rather than masculine, even giving Tailgate a female voice. I know technically all the Cybertronians except Arcee are genderless, but if they really want to portray Tailgate as female, why not just start using female pronouns? I just don't get it.

When I was a kid I genuinely used to think that Spinister was a play on "Spinster" (like, as in an old maid). It was only years later I realised it was a portmanteau of Spin + Sinister. Stupid, I know...

Given the more fluid definitions of gender in society these days, I don't see it as a problem having a 'feminine' character who is referred to as a 'he'. It happens in real life. Considering the dearth of such characters in populist fiction, it's great to see MTMTE provide them with a voice.

How each transformers movie (live action) remembers what happened in previous movie but changes or ignores the established origin lines from the previous movie.

No, they do have genders. Simon Furman originally wrote TFs as genderless beings (with the exception of Arcee, who was an experiment). Later writers then decided they wanted gendered TF and realised what a cock up Furman had made. Arcee's background was never mentioned again. With the introduction of Caminus and more female TFs, the non gendered origin was retconned out of existence. That's my understanding of it.

Couldn't care any less about Tailgate, I hate him.

I actually made the same mistake :)  I thought Spinister was like spinster. I also didn't catch the play on "grotesque" and "tusk" in Grotusque's name.

So what exactly is going on with the Combaticons in their origin episode? Starscream inserts the personality components, then they somehow go from burned-out husks of WW2 vehicles, to pristine examples of the same vehicles, to their modern vehicles, to robot mode. How did they change to the modern vehicles with nothing around to scan? Maybe Starscream provided them with the data?
Damn, I just thought of a great idea: a new set of Combaticons based on their ORIGINAL toon vehicle modes. Wasn't Blast Off some kind of bomber, and Vortex was a Japanese Zero (kamikaze) jet? That would be awesome.

I can only assume they are separate Grimlocks of similar name.

I personally believe that RID and Prime are their own continuity. Never played the games or read the fiction, so from my perspective, they are their own thing.

Oh, and I know RID tried to make a reference to the games with Bumblebee mentioning Starscream's old body, but to me that was just hasty fanwank, to make the viewers believe that they still remember FOC.

I believe the show runners have said that they are not the same Grimlock.

I didn't realize Bumblebee meant it in that sense. Hmm, makes my headcanon about the base in the mountain being the Ark from FoC more plausible.

How does Tailgate have a "feminine" voice? I've read through MTMTE several times now but never seen anything to suggest the writer is intending for Tailgate to have *any* female characteristics. What feminine characteristics are you referring to?

I think when they say the female voice thing, they mean Susan Blu voicing MTMTE Tailgate at Botcon script reading, probably a reference to Tailgate being like a little boy, and grown women types usually voice those characters, that's my takeaway from it at least.

Yes I was referring to the Susan Blu voice which Roberts approved. I believe the voice was used because of how they've been leaning toward making Tailgate portrayed as female when Tailgate was described as "The Ingenue" which is a term for a female stock character. It was accident but Roberts liked what he'd accidentally done and the writers have been rolling with it ever since. Heck they even made Tailgate's holoform female when originally it was a little more hard to tell.

But I rather not get into genders and all that to keep this on topic.

What did James Roberts mean by Riptide the knave.

I still can't quite figure out what he meant by that.

Outside of Beast Wars I don't think animal Transformers are meant as disguise. I think in some cases something like a tiger or T Rex alt mode is chosen more for its combat uses.

Other times a Transformer might just like the look of an animal and opt to use it for an alternative mode.

Or that they were meant to be different continuities. We REALLY need to drop the entire Aligned nonsense. It's past time.

As far as being confused: I'm confused how every show exept BW and TFA gets blasted for being a 30 minute toy commercial with a complex list of every fault from every series, yet the same fans handwave anyone away that points out the many faults in both those series.
