Something got me when I watched DoTM again. Megatron bellows "We will rebuild Cybertron.... together." But then Sentinel rips part of his head off and says "I said I'd work WITH you, not FOR you!"

But that makes no sense. Megatron just said; "We'll rebuild it together.". He didn't say; "I'll rebuild Cybertron myself!"

 

It seemed to me that Sentinel was establishing dominance over Megatron (Stop laughing) by making it very clear that while they might be working together, Sentinel would be the star of the show and would be calling the shots. His violent manners towards Megatron conveyed that very nicely.

 

Because Sentinel Prime is a dick.

He was a great character. He might be a dick but overall was well done. Great design, smart, cunning and didnt take bullshit from anyone Decpticon or Autobot.

 

Must agree with this. A lot of people hate sentinel prime because he's a traitor, but he's too great of a character for me to hate.

 

Lets put this into perspective. Sentinel Prime reunited Cybertron and founded the Autobots. After long years of chaos peace was finally established. Until Megatron ruined it all aligning with the Fallen bringing about the second generation Decepticon movement.

Sentinel Prime and Megatron are using each other. Sentinel is establishing that he is the master and not subordinate to Megatron.

 

I'm pretty sure that, had they succeeded, it just would have been the start of a new war between the two of them. And since Sentinel had just alienated many of his allies...

 

I agree one hundred percent with this.

But it keeps Megatron in check, so that his confidence doesn't get too high for the moment, or his prospects at least, to try to quell any idea of usurping Sentinel. Carly ended up screwing that up for Sentinel eventually, to Optimus'/Earth's benefit.

 

I think Sentinel felt they were getting too buddy-buddy. Remember to Sentinel he's still disgusted with allying with the Decepticons, even though he sees it as required.

Sentinel says: "I may be damned(sounds like dained) to work with you that our planet may survive. I will never work FOR you and you would be wise to remember the difference."

I think "damned" was the intended word, regardless the word the meaning is still the same. So the way it was worded was fine, sentinel was confirming that they were just working together. As stated before Sentinel was just making the point to power hungry Megatron that he will never serve him. It potrays that the twos relationship is strictly business and sets things up for Megatron to massacre him after he isn't needed.

 

"I have deigned to work with you that our planet may survive. I will never work for you! And you would be wise to remember the difference."

deigned: to do something that one considers to be beneath one's dignity. In other words, Sentinel says: "I have deemed it necessary to...*shudder*...work with you, Megatron. Not for you!"

The subtitles have this, and the official novelization has it too. But whatever, all of the valid explanations still stand.
