Figure it needs to serve 2-3 laptops, 1 desktop and a media box hooked to the TV for streaming and the like. Everything is N wireless so thats a gimme, figuring dual band would be wise as well. What I am looking for is the best bang for the buck as far as network stability goes(sick of dicking with and rebooting router). Also my place is like 100' long by 30' wide and has a second story on one end(apartment) and I supply the internet(wireless) there as well. Stability is my number one goal(hate dicking with computers or router to browse online), range would be number two(can live with an extender or something). I have been reading reviews and doing my own homework, but for every good review of a router, you get a bad one as well. So help me out here.
This one: A Good Wi-Fi Router | The Wirecutter Myself, at least 4 friends, numerous family members, and 3 business networks I set up use it. It's damn near perfect.
Thanks. Its on the high side of stuff I was looking at but damn, sure seems people like it. Was actually not aware of it either, going to do more research now.
Linksys is a good brand to look out for. I'm currently rocking a Linksys WRT54G. Been serving me for quite a few years now.
While I can't speak for the Stock Firmware (I run only DD-WRT on my (Many) Routers in the house) this is a great router and a Steal as it once was a $200 Router. Newegg.com - Refurbished: Linksys E3000-RM 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4/5GHz Dual Band Gigabit Wireless Router Oh and that Asus is a beast
lol I'd rather not try my luck at refurb's(it never goes my way on them) Trying to keep external antenna for range, trying to find that Asus for under $150 though lol
Well thanks folks..... Now I spent $260 lol Got the Asus rt-n66u for my house and the Asus rt-n56u for my folks for Christmas since my dad has been complaining about the signal in the family room and I know his router is old as hell. So I hope they live up to the hype.
I'm running the Asus rt-n66u in my house since it got here on Tues. Kick ass beastie and haven't had to touch it since I installed it. 2 laptops and WDTV on my end and a tenant piggy backing off of it on the other side of the house in the apartment like 70' away. No issues no complaints. Streaming video, internet browsing, its all good. Did go on sale at tigerdirect for 120$ so they are sending me a gift card for the difference from what I paid.(if u bought it from them recently u can do it too) So thanks for the help in picking one, no complaints here
Update: This thing kicked ass from day one and is still kicking ass. I have had to reset it a whopping zero times since my initial setup. This includes multiple power outages and multiple cable outages(internet) due to power line and cable line work on my street and the surrounding neighborhoods. Have not had to resign in to anything, reboot something to get online or fight any remote TV viewers/streamers once set up intially. Since its down to $120 now I wouldnt recommend anything else
Slight update with one issue. My 2 yr old turned off the wireless on here laptop. Once we figured out how to turn it on(its an Acer) it connected fine. However at the same time it knocked my laptop off once she reconnected. I would have intermittent dropouts on my laptop(compaq) where it would drop from my router completely and the not recognize my router when i went to connect to a network as if it wasn't there but it showed in the wireless network choices. The magically reconnect itself or would let me connect if I tried again. Was only able to resolve this after I changed channel settings for the router from "auto" to channel "9". Downloaded Vistumbler to check out all local wireless network channels. I do not know if this was a coincidence or a neighbor has something causing interference with mine. Throwing this out there if anyone else has issues since people always ask questions but rarely ever give an answer if it is fixed.
