I personaly enjoy regular animation most because I feel that more can be done, for WAY CHEAPER but still look amazing. For example I LOVED TF:Animated- the action sequences were much more entertaining than what I've seen while recently watching TF Prime. What's your preference?

Depends on the quality of the animation for either version. I'd still like a full series with the level of writing from Beast Wars/Prime but the animation level of the G1 movie or anime series like Gundam or Macross. Because quite frankly with 2D you can get more characters in the series. You can also show more battle damage. CG is limiting. The models and backgrounds cost a lot, so you see a lot of reuse. With 2D you can have more random and one shot characters.

But either way it comes down to the quality of the writing.

    I prefer 2D animation since:
    - you don't run into that "it's too expensive to do x" excuse
    - it can be stylized; most CGI works tend to look the same

I like both but I think I prefer 2d over 3d a little more because the 2d characters can add more characters and has a higher budget than a 3d cartoon

Each has it's strengths and weaknesses, but I like both about equally. If I had to pick, I'd give a slight preference to CGI, since I think it looks cleaner and the expense forces the writers to keep the cast small and develop a few characters.

Really though, as long as the writing is good, I'm willing to overlook short-comings in whatever animation style a series uses.

CGI because you can get more realism out of it than regular animation.

whether cgi is good or bad, expensive of cheap,

you can only get this awesomeness from 2d, traditional animation.

when you do not have draw a character 360 degrees, every inch, in 3 modes, *robot, vehicle, and transformation*, then you can get more awesome things like this, just random characters there. that serve no purpose, but yet make both g1 fans happy, and make cybertron feel like it is a populated world.

more interesting backgrounds too. in g1 you would have trees, and forests, lakes, but in prime, you have big blank empty spaces. and not nearly as colorful of backgrounds.

you got this from prime. sure, you got some nice trees in the background there. but it is NOTHING compared to the beauty that is from this scene 27 years earlier; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0kKjMWgyIM

the beauty in just the animation alone. just look at the background. when hot rod passes by autobot city, through the trees, you see this entire and drawn painting in the background. with trees, rivers, bridges. autobot city looks like a city. and it LOOKS like this film is taking place in the northwest. later on, while passing by kup, you have all the green on the rocks, the autobots in the background, that serve no purpose to the story, but are just there to populate the city. Huffer, and bluestreak can be scene there. i can't tell who the green guy is. but there would be zero reason to animate that in cgi. because it would take way too long to design all those character models, if you are not actually going to use the character in the story. the only reason to have those there, would be if you had already drawn their character models previously. but you do not need to draw them on all sides in traditional.

this is why i favor traditional. you can do things that you just can not do in cg. because it is impractical.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrMbkbTPrPA

but there is an even better example of amazing animation. just watch the backgrounds alone.

you just do not get the beauty, without traditional animation, or really high movie level budget cg, per episode.

and the cheaper the episodes, the more we are going to get.

Depends entirely on who the artist(s) is(are). Despite choosing to do 2D instead of 3D in college, I usually prefer the look of well done 3D over well done 2D.

There are 2D styles I really love, but TFA's style wasn't one of them. I've never been a fan of action scenes where they use the flashing "he's moving super fast guys!" backgrounds and TFA had a bit too much of that for my taste. It's a style of animating that just isn't everybody's cup 'o tea.

If a show has to be 2D, I tend to prefer 2D styles that put an incredible amount of effort into the backgrounds. Like Mushi-shi. It's just beautiful to look at.

Edit: Also, the lines between 2D and 3D are blurring as time goes on. I know AnimatePro now allows you to build a pretty large 3D world with 2D layers. ToonBoom let's you do it on a smaller scale. You can see this being done in shows such as Attack on Titan when they're swinging through forests or the city.
It's just funny because people will talk about how much they love *insert show here*'s traditional 2D animation, and it's actually half 3D.

This is a toss up for me. Prime had some of the most beautiful CGI, and I loved Beast Wars/Machines. But I also loved the animation in the original animated movie.

I prefer 2D because Hasbro has yet to make a better Transformers CGI show than Beast Wars

Both are good. Both have good stuff connected to them, and bad.

Kung Fu Pandas a super good looking CGI movie. Spectacular Spider-man is a super good looking hand drawn show.

    Depends on the artist.

Oh man. your hitting all my soft point in one blow.

I am a 2D animator who later learn 3D. First of all both balance out in price. 3D has a crazy high start budget, but when that's over it's cheap, unless you want to add more and more characters. 2D cost the same all the way through and changing things up or adding new character doesn't affect the price. But you right about 2D being cheap cause...man 3D artist are just allowed to charge too much.

I like the 2D stuff, and with 2D I can get what i want; more and more and more character added. But I think Transformers can be better served with 3D models. So......I...can't decided.....
