Holy crap I called it! I’ll spoiler the main parts but omg I can’t wait to fully read this issue. Skybound is doing a fantastic job connecting GiJoe and the Transformers together
Cobra Commander digging Megatron out of the ice and using it for Cobra tech is one of the best ideas that has been used when crossing over GiJoe and Transformers. And I love how Megatron is fully aware of what’s going on from this panel alone. So far Skybound has been straight cooking!

They did it... those bloody bastards, they actually did it!

    They brought in Cobra-La!

    And it didn't suck!

    I actually dug this issue!

I mean, they used the Skuxxoids in Void Rivals, I shouldn't be surprised!

And yet I am! Even more surprised that I actually dug it!

Let's see where this is all headed!

Do y'all think it'd make sense to have a dedicated Energon Universe G.I. Joe thread here?

I’m assuming this will will be the discussion thread for this issue?

If you click this thread, then expect spoilers like all of the other ones…

Holy crap! While Megatron being there wasn’t a shock, the fact that they’re using Cobra-La did. I absolutely loved GI Joe The Movie, and I always wished the comics were like the cartoon (unlike Transformers, where it was the other way around for me). I could hear Chris Latta and Burgess Meredith speaking in my head as I read this… I can’t wait to see where this is all going!

Don’t have much to add except that it was a fun issue. I also can’t wait to see where this all goes!

They seem to be marrying cartoon CC’s backstory with the original comics backstory.

    Not a bad idea.

How so? The cartoon backstory part is pretty clear to me, but I didn't pick up on the nods to the original comic.

    From the TFwiki.

    • Cobra Commander is established to be a normal human who Cobra-La took in, something glimpsed by his caucasian skin tone while recovering, marrying his more typical backstories in other media with his Sunbow origin. Whether this CC was a used car salesman remains to be seen.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I guess I did notice that but it didn't register as being from other sources. Thanks!

I think that's the best why to go with CC and it's kind of similar to what Tom Scioli did in Transformers vs. G.I. Joe, so it's not that hard to understand.

I mean, do we even have a dedicated EU Transformers thread? So far every issue had been it's own thread. Although I would rather we just had a single thread for each series

The way I saw how things work in this forum, each Transformers on-going issue is discussed in dedicated thread. And I think it's good since it would other wise become too long and difficult to jump in to a specific issue. Miniseries are often organized in one thread, but some popular ones can have separated thread.

I think its funny that people need to rely on a wiki page for info that the book cleary gives.

The main reason I was asking if we wanted just a single thread for Skybound's G.I. Joe is because, like, I don't know if every issue or series down the line is gonna connect to Transformers, but I still kinda like talking about it with y'all here. But I'm cool with having individual threads per issue.

We were all so focused on Megatron that we didn't even consider Cobra-la. I know some GI-Joe fans are probably split on that but I love it, personally. It adds a whole lot more to the mythos. Like Duke I don't think this first issue had the same splash as Transformers and Void Rivals did, but I'm still invested all the same. Cobra Commander definitely stands out as a villain who is loyal, honest, but still scheming and villainous, which adds some good contrast between him and the Decepticons. Now that we've got the backdrop set I'm interested to see where things go from here.

I actually really like the idea that Cobra Commander was just a regular human dude who was taken in by Cobra-La, and honestly I think it changes the story a lot more than you would think at first. Because now, like, Cobra Commander can still be as Hama characterized him; someone disenfranchised, someone who felt left behind and forgotten and decided to raise an army to remake the world in his image after being burned one too many times. Cobra-La taking him in and then him later finding Megatron are steps on that journey now. Sure, it raises it to fantastical, sci-fi proportions, but the base story is still the same, whereas in the cartoon him being a Cobra-La nobleman means that he's starting out as this otherworldly elite rather than just a disenfranchised everyman.
