I'm sorry, "the fan community will complain about everything."? really?

If they'd taken Masterpiece Prime, upgraded him so he can be more flexible and used him as the Movie prime - do you think anyone would complain? Heck, that toy is the BEST OP ever. When I got him (as first one in Hungary) and showed him around, not only did all TF fans here (and there are about 100 I know) agreed that this is THE Optimus, even my colleagues who know very little about TFs were amazed by that toy, some even recalled seeing the show as kids and recognising Optimus.

The TF movie, btw, will not fail because us fans who complain, no. I know we are a minority. Spiderman bombed even with the cries against him having organic webshooters (pretty logical idea, btw).

It will fail for the same reason the Hulk, or Godzilla failed... because of the lackluster story and because it's gonna be a 80% action/10% story/10% corny humor movie. The mentioned movies failed because of this (Hulk also had utterly bad CGI, yeah). People will surely watch it on the first week, but will they recommend it to every friend they meet? Nope. I watched War of The Worlds and POTC 1-2 because friends talked me into it (and haven't regretted in both cases) but I cannot imagine this happening with TFs.

Mind you, I'm saying what I'm saying based on the script I read. Judging by the photos/shooting scenes/documents we saw since then, I'd hazard a guess the leaked script is about 85% the final one, so there won't be any huge surprises in the cinema for me. (Except maybe about the 'relationship' of OP and Megs, I pray thay have changed that.)

    Yes there would be complaints.

For the Record Masterpiece Prime is NOT my best prime ever or even my favorite prime. Heck I like Alt Nemesis Prime better than my Masterpiece Prime.

Really, brother- The whole point of that post is that in the end, our opinions about the design choices of the film really aren't going to matter.

Even moreso, I just can't figure out why so many people seem to want to see the same old stuff up on screen.

I definitely wouldn't be happy about it. I personally expect to see something new and previously unseen when I go into a movie like this. If I were to go into a film and see the equivalent of a walking toy in a big budget film, I would laugh. If they do a perfect G1-accurate movie version of Tranformers, it shopuld be an entirely CG film, IMHO.

I'm guessing you mean that it did really well? Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 did KILLER at the B.O.

Those are pretty good examples, but really, niether of them failed. They both made money, they're just not blockbusters.

Gojira did well at the box office, especially the first weekend... Few probs with Gojira.
    1) No flame breath. The cartoon at least gave it back to him. Why they took that out, I'll never know.
    2) Matthew Broderick... Bad. His acting was horrible in that movie. Again, they fixed it in the cartoon. Ian Zeiring did a much better job.
    3) Everything was shot at night... Other than his first attack on New York, EVERYTHING was Rainy and at night. I'm not sure why, but CGI stuff always looks better during the day time... I'm guessing it's easier to do at night? That's why so much stuff is done at night...
    4) every character other than Animal was written pretty poorly... The movie could have been done very well, (i did like the new look to him.) but was just not executed well.

While everyone does bash bay, IMO he does a great job of showing us very GRAND scenes... Armageddon is a prime example and you have to admit the battle at Pearl Harbor was very cool...

    Again, my $.02.

We don't want to see the same old stuff - we just want it to be about as close to the originals as Batman Begins or Spiderman was. I mean, we don't want any radical re-imagining, as the movie's supposed to be based on G1 (yeah, many argue about that, but since it's not based on BW/BM or the Armada line that leaves us only the first generation).

heck, I didn't say they should copy the toy exactly. I meant that if they took that as a basis and rebuilt him so that he'dd have opening doors for example, and overall would be as much of a real-life truck as possible. I brought MP OP up because he's pretty perfect already in that view.

That's what I meant, yes, sorry about it. So what does 'bombed' mean then? I heard people using it and did likewise.

TF will make money enough too for Bay to pull it off, but I doubt it will spawn a sequel. That1s for better or worse, we shall see.

You have a really good point there. I think both Batman Begins (and Spider-Man) did a pretty good job at reinterpreting the legend, but I also think B.B. strayed HEAVILY from a "Batman" design aesthetic. I remember everyone on AICN was whining about the Batmobile, and that thing ended up kicking ass in the film. Why?, because it was interesting and made sense in the story, which is what I'm hoping for in Transformers.

Haha, no problem, your English is better than my Hungarian. :)  "Bombed" means that a movie does awful in the theaters. Example: "Battlefield Earth" or "The Postman".

B.B. used lots of sources for re-imagining Batman, the old Comics, the newer Year One storyline, even some Elseworlds stories. However, TFs don't have so many continuities. Yeah, I'd wish this movie was as good as B.B. (which I have watched 3 times now... :)  ) but judging by the script, I'd say it'll about on the level of F4, and even much less in terms of characterisation (especially BB, Jazz and most of the Cons - the ones that had predecessors, that is... are nothing like any of their older versions).

Thanks for clearing 'bombed' up, turns out I have been using it wrong all the time... :)  Yeah, Postman was terrible.

You don't go to see Batman or Spiderman because of their amazing costumes; their spandex are not the special effect that's meant to blow your mind; their costumes aren't the main attraction of the film. This contrasts with Transformers, who themselves are the spectacle to behold. Prior Transformer designs, and particularly their simplistic child-level transformations, can't deliver on that front. Unlike Batman and Spiderman, who just need to look good, the Transformers "look" and transformation have be the entire reason you paid $8 to see the film. If what you see is comparable to what a talented fan comes up with in his spare time, well...it might "look right", but is it doing it's job?

Example: a semi that essentially stands up, and folds out a head and a pair of arms does not make your jaw drop; we the fans like it because it looks "right" to us. But there's nothing amazing or mind-blowing about it. But when ILM's Prime transforms? That should be an impressive sight for sure. If there wasn't a painfully apparent difference between ILM's work and great fan artist work, quite frankly ILM would really be phoning this one in.

Mind you, that doesn't account for the entire new aesthetic, but definitely a big chunk of it. Seeing the standard Autobot car transformation for the 10,000 time isn't going to capture our attention the way something entirely new and far more detailed will, even if we think the standard way is the right way.

:p  Uh yes I do go to see the costumes. Especially Spider-Man 3 black symbiote costume at the same time "transformers" will be on. The entire reason I may be skipping it may also be the transformations.

I agree 100% I wish more "fans" could have as much of an open mind as it sounds like you do.

Thanks :)  It's nice to be considered one with an open mind, instead of just a "movie supporter" :p

You're going to see Spiderman 3 solely because Toby Mcguire will be wearing black spandex instead of red and blue, or because of what the black spandex means is happening with the story (i.e. black = symbiote which = Venom)?

The sight to be seen in super-hero films is not their spandex, but their superpowers and the villains they overcome with them. While those films have special effects, they are not special effect films, they are character-driven films. Transformers is special effect driven, the Transformers themselves are the feature, and any characterization they may have (in this incarnation or others) is merely icing on the cake (and here's hoping the final film has plenty of it).

Because of that, Transformers would fail to captivate if they just did it "right", instead of taking it far beyond what's expected. This is a double-edged sword for sure. Fans expectations are something within the norm, and perceive anything outside that as "wrong". Outsiders need to be pleasantly surprised to find out this is NOT what they were expecting, as they have no interest in the current Transformers norm whatsoever. If you just appeal to the current fanbases comfort zone, you're not going to make any new friends; this is especially troublesome with Transformers, as it's actual ticket buying audience is nowhere near a Spiderman or Batman, who are already targeted at teenagers and adults.

Hey - If I go to see Spidey 3, it'll be because of Venom.

Tobey Macguire is too whiny as Spidey for my tastes.

Heck, surely the transformation of some of the old 1984 toys weren't mind-boggling...

I'm into Transformers only part because of the toys and transformations. I'm mostly liking them for the elaborate story that Marvel US and UK and the Sunbow cartoon built up for them over 20 years. I like them for the diverse characters, their origin mythos, the whole concept of the fact that they are a race of intelligent robots, created by a Light God to be the last line of defense against an ancient evil.

So yeah, the designs are only secondary for me, and frankly, if the story would be good and true to the roots, I wouldn't post here complaining... ;)

It's kinda ironic that the script for B.B. was almost just as divisive as TF, people dumped on it because of David Goyer's involvement (he had just come off of a disastrous production, Blade Trinity) without even factoring in how a story is told may sometimes be more important than the ingredients itself.

If it wasn't for Johnny Storm, F4 would have had alot less character building than The Island... as is it's just below that of The Island.

The main Problem in my opinion is using existing TF names for the Characters some of us just cant get past their old incarnations.... is that a good or bad thing well you decide.
