Continuing my theme of upgrading the classics figures, I am now taking steps to modify the generations Trailbreaker. Although this is a great figure design and a nicely updated version of the character, the actual execution of the toy was too short IMO and needed a bit of a lift. So, I have created a a couple of custom designed parts to give him extra height and better proportions. The waist upgrade doesn't work perfectly in vehicle mode. As a result, I will have to make some additional parts to bridge the gap it has created. With these upgrades, Trailbreaker now stands as a tall deluxe (a tiny bit taller than Jazz). What I am not sure about is whether he could get away with a little more height, or whether that would start to look out of proportion. Let me know your thoughts. I would like him to be a bit taller but I can't quite decide if that would go too far. I also plan to give him new hands, a new laser hand and a shoulder cannon. After all that, I will repaint him in G1 color. Thanks for looking. UPDATES *Wave 1 upgrades done. Taller Trailbreaker achieved. Thanks. I was wondering about that too. I kinda like the existing head but I know where you're going. A G1 sculpt would look cool.
Thanks. I've actually printed the add on parts in black now and they are really looking the business. I've also started on a stage 3 height adjustment for the figure. So, I'm hoping I can get Trailbreaker just a little taller than his deluxe counterparts and still transform. I should have that done in the next few days. I will get new pics on here as soon as it's done.
Here is an update. Wave 1 parts done and I believe they have made a significant improvement upon the stock figure. New waist New ankles New feet No parts forming. There are a few knock on effects of these mods on the vehicle mode but I am going to work on those as part of the wave 2 upgrades. Filler panel New backpack/rear roof Here is Trailbreaker towering over unmodified Hoist and standing a head or so taller than Jazz
Love the chunky feet!!! Huge improvement here definitely. Can't wait for the ALT mode, I'm glad you are planning that as well.
Panel fillers completed. Here is how they look in robot mode. The intent would be to paint the front part of the mod red, to look like the red bands TB has running across his thigh. These haven't been cleaned up yet. Just straight off the printer and tested for fit. Next up....new roof.
I have an update on TB. I have managed to design and print part of his roof upgrade (which you can't really see in these pics because the additional parts are on his back). But, there isn't much to see there yet. The big update here is that I have created a more G1 style arm cannon for him (as yet unpainted). I can say goodbye to his X2Toys cannon now
Thanks for the feedback guys. I probably will sell the parts once I'm happy with the final versions and they all fit together properly
Next update. Shoulder cannon mount is completed and TB is starting to take shape. I tweaked some of the other parts for better fit too. Main thing left now is the roof shell which will mount onto the 5mm port on TB's back. Here are a few pics showing a bit more of the mods.
Well this is coming along so well that I am now willing to pay after market prices on this guy! Sorry if I missed this but are you using a home printer? I totally do see what you are doing here. Part of my lack of work is that when I start something the old bashing way, I can see nothing but a Sketch-Up design and a robot printing it for me...then I stop working I CANNOT wait for the ALT mode!!!
