Why is this? Did it get blown up in the movie or something?

Morons. You mean to tell me that it's when the film is near-finished that the Chinese have a problem with the film? Not during filming? "It's cool that we invested so much into your film and even made you use one of our cars oh, and it's also kinda neat that one of your characters only speaks Chinese, we're pulling put. Peace".

Not without making themselves look like majod assholes for ruining a movie.

They should just let it slide as this is really just makes things worse and them look stupid. But hey, You can't delay the inevitable can you? Just further it's progress..

They're basically upset that it was used in promotional material. Sounds like it appeared in a trailer and they are upset about that.

Their is another dynamic at play here, The Chinese government with their lucrative growing consumer base. The government could block Paramount and their subsidiaries from entering the Chinese marketplace.

They'd shoot themselves in the foot doing that, though. Give Paramount too hard of a time and other entertainment companies will take note.

But it is in the gov't best interests to allow films since they take most of the box office.

It won't, it's too close to ship date. Theaters probably already have it.

That said, this isn't the first time China has done some strange stuff. For example, Battlefield 4 was pushed out as a China-positive game, and it technically is - there's a very positive Chinese influence and a negative one, and the positive one teams up with the US and takes down the bad guy. After several months of the game being very popular in China, they inexplicably banned it because "it portrayed the Chinese government in a negative light" despite never actually doing so.

Oooooor, maybe Beijing Pangu (hotel owners) are upset that Paramount broke one of the terms of their agreement, like the article says.
Rather than being an elaborate scam or a Chinese government conspiracy to thwart movie fans.
