CBC News - Canada - Canada's last WW I veteran dies

I only hope that we can put that kind of conflict behind us. Forever.

Well truly, it is the end of an era with this death, but I think that though its important to move beyond the horrors of WWI, at the same time its even more imperative that we remember it. We must remember the events that lead up to it, the mistakes that were made after it that led to world war 2, and everything in between. This is especially true for us Canadians, for whom WWI was a time where our nation really showed the world the courage, valor, and determination that we are capable of. It helped shape not only our own true national independance, but the "soul" of our nation as well.

I salute him and the millions of other who fought in the war to end all wars. Sadly it wasn't the last war and a worse was was in part caused by the harsh terms imposed upon Germany.

its amazing that any veterans of the war are still with us this close to 100th anniversary of its start.

    16?

I can barely jog a lap, let alone fight a war. Good grief.

Those of you who usually make jokes in General Discussion threads, I can understand that they're jokes...

But to me, that's pretty tactless. Our veterans were a vital addition to the war, in helping win it.

    Please don't downplay that importance.

Not funny guys. Thousands of Canadian soldiers fought and died in the Great War. We were there from day one. I don't appreciate your comments. 67 000 killed and 173 000 wounded Canadians, or any other nationality for that matter, is nothing to poke fun at.

I could go into the fact that the U.S. didn't get involved until 1917, a little more than a year and a half before the war ended. But unlike you, I respect your veterans' contributions regardless of the fact that they lived through a year and a half of hell instead of four.

Well all I can say is that at least he had a full life, unlike many of his army comrades. It wouldn't matter whether he was a war hero or just some poor schmoe, he was in the war and that should always be respected.

28, and I can jog like two. Just that Yanks have no buisness trying to make jokes about anyone's commitment to WW1.

Actually, for once, I wasn't trying to be funny. I didn't know Canada was in any war, let alone had a military. Not something I usually hear about, maybe because the U.S. usually overshadows everyone else.
