Everyone's been gushing about the revelation that appeared in the latest TF comic. Out of curiousity, I checked up to see what it was all about. It is something that has the potential to shake the very foundations of TF lore.

(Unless you want to be spoiled don't go further)

When Optimus Prime was formerly known as Orion Pax on Cybertron, he was given assistance by a high-ranking Senator to combat the corruption amongst Cyberton's elite. However, this Senator was captured and for his act of "treason" his head/hand was replaced with (Empurata, an amputation technique) and his personality was wiped of all emotion (Shadowplay, another technique). This Senator was Shockwave. scans_daily | More Than Meets the Eye - Shadowplay conclusion (SPOILERS)

That is one HELL of a retcon to give to a long-running Transformer character. It's set up excellently too: there are clues spread from the Senator's first meeting with Pax in CHAOS THEORY, and throughout the rest of the successive comics to today's revelation in MTMTE. And besides that, it actually provides a chilling tragic backstory to a traditionally emotionless character, and is sure to bring about a grand impact in issues to come.

But... (sorry guys, there's always going to be a "but") does it befit Shockwave to have this kind of tale? Some TFans are going to argue he was a robot scientist who worked on logic, that lack of emotion is how he always was, and also they might not sit with his arm cannon being the result of a mutilation decreed by the state. It's sort of a question of whether he was always an emotional void from his creation, or whether he was an actual person who ended up a void - some think the first is awesome, others feel the way about the second.

However, I personally am really impressed by it. Shockwave's lack of emotion makes him sort of boring (as opposed to Soundwave simply being too cold to emote), and the whole "tragically swayed to evil" bit really works in his favour. Hopefully, it can be used more in future media.

    What do you think?
