One thing. If you plan on getting one of the 16 bit MK's, here's some things you should know.

SNES: Has better graphics. No blood. Subzero doesn't have his famous fatality.
Genesis: Plays better. Has blood. All fatalities intact.

That only aplies to the original though. If I'm not mistaken both versions of MK2 are basically the same.

You'd probably be better off getting Eternal Champions though. Way more fun than the old MK games. If you can, try and find Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Darkside for the Sega CD. That game's loaded with features. It's also got a dog, a chicken, and a politician as playable characters. What other fighter can claim that?

OMG that game is so awesome! One of the best RPGs for the SNES along with Chrono Trigger and FF VI. Can't wait for the GBA version to get released :D

These are the better games I've played and/or own. I could easily list more if I go further into the Sega CD and Turbo CD and Super CD games.

SNES (I didn't get one until late in its life, so I haven't played many games on it):
    Mega Man X series
    Castlevania IV
    Zelda
Final Fight series (though the Sega/Mega CD version of Final Fight is better)
Super Street Fighter II and SFII Turbo (though the Genesis/MD version is a little faster, which I prefer)

    Genesis/Mega Drive:
    Streets of Rage series
    Sonic 1 and 2
    Shining Force 1 and 2
Crusader of Centy (just started playing it; it's not bad)
Samurai Shodown (ok on the Genesis/Mega Drive and probably better on the Sega/Mega CD; I'm a purist and only play it on my Neo Geo)
    Super Smash TV
    MERCS
    Revenge of Shinobi
    Gunstar Heroes
    Phantasy Star series
    Castlevania Bloodlines
    the Street Fighter II games
    Thunderforce II and III

    TurboGrafx-16:
    Magical Chase
    Blazing Lazers
    Neutopia I and II
    Bonk's Adventure
    Bonk's Revenge
Bonk 3 (the Super CD version has extras)
Air Zonk (Super Air Zonk, the Super CD, is better yet)
    Bomberman
    Legendary Axe II
    Devil's Crush
    Alien Crush
    Dungeon Explorer I
    Dungeon Explorer II (Super CD)
    Gate of Thunder (Super CD)
    Lords of Thunder (Super CD)
    Ys I and II (CD)
    Dragon Slayer (Super CD)
    Dracula X (Japanese Super CD)
    Panic Bomber (Japanese Super CD)
