Not surprising. He initially wanted Transformers 2007 to be about "a boy and his car", and we all know how that turned out, so now we got a movie about "a girl and her car"... and it was actually done right this time.

The film felt very Spielbergo. Would love to see him direct a TF film with as much heart as Bumblebee.

Spielberg actually liked TF1 a lot, he said as much in the bonus features. I thought Transformers was very Spielbergian, and many critics then (i.e Ebert) thought so too, with a 3/4.

The first movie, if you forget the stupid humor and all that, really isn't that bad of a movie at all. Fandom inconsistencies aside, the film is a good one in general. But now with four shitty sequels under it's belt, it's kind of overshadowed. Much like many other franchises, like Star Wars, Airbud, StarTrek, IceAge (Yes, even that saga had a good first movie...), etc. Hell, even Harry Potter is dipping into these waters now...

Oh, did the executive producer of the movie say he liked it? That's not a given or anything. :rolleyes2

The point is that Knight has apparently hit that desired tone tenfold with this one, and despite whatever you or Ebert (ohh la la) thought of the '07 one, everyone and their dogs are likening this movie to feeling very Spielberg-ish light years more than they ever did with Bay's shattered metal explosion fest o' bullshit. Again, just because that first one was less worse than the other four, it doesn't mean it was good. All these years later and people still can't differentiate between the two.

Agreed, it's a 2000s classic in retrospect. Shame about what followed.
    Meh.
Most people (not just critics, audience scores) think 2007 was good-great. And no, Spielberg has said movies that he has produced were bad before, so that argument doesn't make sense. He's big enough that he can distance himself from the immediate reception of a film and actually say what he thought. I think most people would say 2007 was good, whether Bumblebee attains the same level of ingrainment in pop culture will have to be seen.

It does when you're quoting the bonus features of the movie lol. No EP would badmouth the movie on its promo content, only after the movie was all said and done. Not saying you're wrong! I think he does legitimately like the first film (otherwise he wouldn't still be on board as deeply as he is), but the point Incepticon was making is that you can't take his word at pure face value if you're quoting the promotional material attached to the movie. lol.

And if you forget the whole NSA analyst subplot that takes up about three hours of screen time and goes nowhere, and the indecipherable action scenes, and the wretched dialog, and that the main character is a stammering whiny narcissist for the entire thing, and that the editing was done by a monkey on Adderall, and, yes, if you forget the stupid humor. Which is impossible to do because the barrage of lousy, unfunny "jokes" never. Goddamn. Stops.

In that case, if you can ignore 75% of the content of the movie, it is a good film. Or, in other words:

    You forgot my favorite part!

The main villains are barely in it, and half of them don't speak!

    That too!

Sorry, I just had gotten distracted by what a selfish twit Sam Witwicky is. I mean, our main hero is only a hero because he owns a pair of glasses that technically aren't even his, and a car that his dad bought him. It's almost like the screenwriters Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, coming as they do from monied families that (from what I've heard) greased the wheels on getting their Hollywood careers started, were unable to conceive of a main character who actually earned any of his accomplishments. Imagine that.

Fair point—even speaking retrospectively now in interviews he speaks of it positively, though.
Ironic that you used a Ken Jeong gif in this, pretty much sums the post up. :p
