My theory is because the older beetles have a more rounded, "friendlier" look to them than the Camaro. Plus you see more of these on the street than Camaros.

I'll wait for the SS BeetleBee but this isn't looking half bad for what this toy is supposed to achieve. Sounds & light + battle mask + wrist blade + decent articulation. Kids will like it.

This coupled with nostalgia. It's a blend most G1 and most movie fans can enjoy.

VW Beetle is also far less generic-looking car than those run-of-the-mill aerodynamic modern muscle car designs populating Bay movies.

I assume the average child would prefer a sleek, more play-friendly sports car.

I must say I'm quite surprised by the positive reaction this is getting. I mean it looks like it has better articulation and maybe a slightly more complex transformation than the new Cyberverse Bumblebees, but then I'm pretty certain this is bigger and more expensive than any of those.

Personally the Battle Mask feature is a highlight for me. Wish a Third Party would create a couple of replacement heads for Studio Series Optimus Prime and Bumblebee and TLK Voyagers Optimus Prime and Megatron with face mask gimmicks.

The compound eyes the little stingers, the alt mode. Nice little package and the gimmicks sound... Gasp... Fun. I hope the movie interests me as much as this figure.

Hoping for some kind of "Evolution" themed figure. It sure would be awesome if they could do a slightly dumbed down MP BB or the TR version with a tweaked vehicle mode.

Why? And what makes an old Beetle less play friendly than a sports car?

Entirely possible as well. But generally, I can see people of all ages enjoying the throwback either for nostalgia's sake or for the novelty of a retro alt mode. I can also see more girls jumping on the wagon because that's who the movie's supposedly going to target more than the two and a half-hour car and explosion commercials did.

    And not just G1 fans.
There's also a lot of people out there who liked Herbie.

The old VW Beetle as a car design has a lot going for it when it comes to toys. The die cast one I got for my grandson fits pretty good in his hand; I think the rounded design just conforms nicely with his palm, and he likes to roll that thing around. And smash other cars. And throw it... and we have to take it and tell him "no throwing, or hitting the dog with it... leave the cats alone... I need a- it's time for your nap."

Are you sure it's not just the same one and they're following you?

You assume wrong. I get a lot of coworkers bringing their kids thru our office when school is out. Most of the kids gravitate to my desk since I've got a few Transformers and other robots on display. I have most of the toy related contracts, so I've always got something new on my desk. I've got a KBB MP Bee on my office shelf and it's always the one they want to see because the Beetle attracts their eye.

Every single little girl loves the VW Bug. They don't even like Transformers, but they love this Bumblebee. He's cute.

I know little boys like him too, because I've had to buy three of the blasted things because the little bastards keep stealing it when I'm away from my office. One was returned, broken.

Incidentally, I have an MMP Bee next to the KBB one. Never been touch. Never been asked about. Dozens of kids every year. They don't care about the old movies anymore. These are 6-15 years olds. All of them ask about the robots. Even if I have other stuff out. Even the older ones that you'd think grown out of toys. Not when they look cool. Always the robots.

For a gimmick toy, this looks quite good!
Sad that it doesn’t quite match the final character model
Hopefully Studio Series will do a better job at that. But this still looks quite fun

So I’m guessing the way this gimmick is intended to work is that the ball thing on his chest will be touching the ground on the underside of his vehicle mode. That way kids can “vroom vroom” him along, rolling the wheel across the ground and that somehow “charges” him, and then they Transform him to robot mode and now he’s all charged now up. Kind of a neat concept. Also liking that battle mask and the Stinger blade is cool.

I can actually see myself buying this. It looks like fun. Plus it’s great to see gimmick toys with articulation.

Now bring on the Studio Series and MPM!!

I like this a lot, except for the giant backpack (and I guess the open chest looks a bit off as well). I highly doubt that I’m going to get this, but it does bring a bit of nostalgia because it reminds me of G1 and the first three live action movie toylines, when we had special gimmicks with all the mainline toys. It reminds me of Ultimate Bumblebee, especially.
