You forget, you get the bonus figure if you're attending. Also there is much more to the Primus package than the toys, (panels, early dealer room, guests/autographs, dinner, any other special event) That's a lot of extra stuff for the money. If you're only in it for the toys, yeah I can see how it would be a little disappointing.

For the first few years I went, I bought extra figures to sell to help cover the cost of the trip, but with more figures getting made and demand pretty much being met, there is little opportunity to make much profit on the figures.

Most Animated fans want that set, sure it's not going to be a winner for everyone, but nothing ever is. There is no sure thing in Transformers.

The finest set in the history of Botcon was 2006's Dawn of Future's Past, and a close second was 2011's Stunti-Con Job. Unfortunately, they set the bar so high with those two (for me anyway), that they now have a hard time matching those sets. Out of this batch, I REALLY like Battletrap and hope Flywheels is in the souvenir sets, I like Packrat's nearly inevitable return, I'm not going to argue with a Megatron with a ton of microns, and I'm not too hyped about SG Stepper- but I do love a bot done up in Halloween colors... so he'll be Halloween Jazz for me...

Still looking forward to reveal #5, still looking forward to the souvenir sets, still looking forward to Botcon itself. Still waiting to see how much a Primus package will be this year with the minicon add-on, but I'm excited for it!

I really like that head. Probably the best fit on that figure I've seen--although the dislike of noseless faces in Prime probably skews that opinion. Not attending or buying this set, but I really like how that looks.

It's probably going to be $415, but if you go you get the weekend pass, Casino night, and an exclusive attendee figure included for free.

Jumping on the band-wagon here, but I could never understand why people would refuse to sell their boxset for less than the full Primus price, even in the less popular years... just so that they get all those other Convention events for free, which makes up about $200 of the Primus pack price.
Obviously if it is a sell-out year you can charge whatever you want, or if you bought extra boxsets that are charged at the full Primus price the only thing extra you get is the Attendee toy, but whenever I try to haggle in the Dealer Room at BotCon for someone's sole boxset, I'm always left with a refusal to sell it for less than the full Primus price, as if that was the only thing they got out of their BotCon admission. :rolleyes2

Hehehe... yeah, bad example if YP was just throwing out a random year in that rant, as 2011 was the last time the Boxset was popular enough to sell out during pre-registration and only within a week for 1600 boxsets (one of their highest number of boxsets for a BotCon), which makes it the MOST popular FunPub boxset ever.

Hopefully this year has an improvement in interest, or they reduce the boxset numbers enough to get their first sell-out set in four years.

Yeah, the thing which set 2011 apart was the strong unifying theme and the association with a fan-favourite show. In my mind, that, 2008 original Shattered Glass, and 2006 pre-Beast Wars Maximals really pulled off the idea of a boxed set well. They all had a strong unifying theme to draw them together and I think that contributed to their appeal. Contrast 2012 which seemed like it couldn't decide if it was a Classics or a Shattered Glass set, or 2013 which was a Machine Wars set yet threw in Obsidian and Strika (who were awesome by the by, just not fitting the theme of the line. But that's forgivable)

At first I kept my Box-Sets displayed around the theme for that year. Filling in the characters from the comic/brochure with others from my collection.

In the end however I now just break up my sets and put them wherever I feel they fit. So years with AEC molds or Prime molds have had those put in with that display. There are still a few "crossovers" but those are mostly in my Neo-Classics display.

I thought the G2 set was a pretty unified theme, but totally agree with you on 2011, 2008 and 2006, by far my favorite sets.

The more talk about the unified themes and, more specifically, the 2011 set the more I really wish they'd do another Animated set like that. Especially if they went for the rest of the Combaticons this time around, Leader Ultra Magnus would make one glorious Onslaught.

As for this year though even if the boxset offerings aren't the best I'm still hoping the souvenir sets will have some worthwhile figures.

If you're on the internet, I'm sure you can figure out how to acquire one of the previous uses of the mold. I'm pretty sure the Swerve version went on clearance. If you really want something, go get it. We are a global community.

2011 is definitely the best unified theme. Even just the boxed set alone is a complete set, regardless of whether you're an Animated collector. It was just awesome.

2006 and 2008 were good too.

The G2 set... The only odd thing about it was that I don't think many of them were actually G2 original characters. They were almost all late G1 characters which had G2 colors.

I still love the Machine Wars set. I just feel the boxed set could have been more unified. I think they should have swapped out some of the attendee figures (Strika and Obsidian for Sandstorm and Starscream) just to make the set more unified.

I think the next unified boxed set will likely be when they can use Combiner Wars figures.

The best sets are the ones that fit into a specific theme and feel like own just that set is good enough and not look like a weird mishmash of different characters and ideas thrown together. Though this years box set's theme is actually having a diverse hodgepodge of characters since it's Axiom Nexus so it's fine in this case.

That would be pretty awesome but Leader Class molds are off limits to FunPub.

    And that'll be awesome.

Then I would like a CWs Guard City outta the series.

Even G2 themed Menasor would sound good too. Just make sure we DON'T get Offroad as a limb. :)

In the sense that all sets are pretty much defined by their fiction this is true. But really its the strength and or popularity of the fiction that makes a theme work. Shattered Glass was strong enough to make the 08 set work, Beast Wars popularity ensured a well produced BW boxset would be a success, likwise G2 has a strong fanbase. Axiom Nexus (and last years Pirates) not so much.

Having said that the G2 set was probably for most people about the defining look of the toys not the Marvel comic which FP ignored anyway. But it did mean they could incorporate toys from outside G2, because the G2 look had actually been around since the last series of Actionmasters in Europe. So even though its not strictly a G2 set it works as a theme.

Machine Wars wasn't a bad set either. The theme was pretty strong, except that the two more popular boxset figures were Beast Machines. I think if instead of Megaplex (which was too dull to be the main highlight of the boxset) they had done MW Starscream which is a more striking use of the mould and possibly gotten a new head on it they maybe could have switched out the BM guys for 2 of the 3 MW add on ones. BM as an add on pair and a Boxset that really felt like Machine Wars. I doubt it would have made the set any more popular but as a fa nof MW I would have felt more positive about the boxset.

Are they actually off limits by command of Hasbro or are FP unwilling to use them because it would mean of boxset of just the leader class toy in order to keep within their budgets. If its the latter I hope if the right Leader class toy comes along FP would be willing to restructure their Botcon offerings for that year.

If/when they do Combiner Wars they make it simple, one combiner in the boxset and one from the add ons. Don't do make a part of the add on combiner be the attendee inclusive figure.

As much as I would like G2 sets (which I really hope Hasbro release in the same style boxes as FOC g2 Bruticus) I would love to see Turbomasters vs Preadators or Liokaiser Vs Big Rescue Force or something else new and odd.

They should totally do an update of their Nexus Prime, IMO. The molds exist in CW to do it.

Otherwise, yeah, Liokaiser would be cool. It'll be a gestalt in a box whatever they do. It'd be mean to non-attendees to sell a set that has 4/5 a combiner in it and say "sorry, should have been there to get the left leg".

The 2011 set is hands down their best work. They combined a unified theme with awesome toys and fiction. I would fly overseas to attend an Animated theme BotCon.

Oooooh good idea Sol. I still enjoy Nexus Prime for the novelty of it, but actually having good figures to go along with the character would be really nice.

I have to assume that is on the "wish list" for Pete and company ...
