It was an intentional design, you'll find the Makuta and their Kraa-Matoran's masks are the same way.
Mutran and Vican's masks count as new to me, but only b/c they're recolors (lime and black instead of silver/pearl and black, I think it looks better).

As much as I love lime green peices, I love black and silver peices because they're nuetral, and are great for MOCing. I do like how Vican was never an Av-Matoran like the rest, but a regular Le-Matoran.

I noticed that Antroz and Reidak's masks look alike as well, but only now after you mention that do I notice the same with the others. Reidak's mask sorta looks a little like Lhikan's. Maybe his mask used to be a noble (powerless) Hau before mutating?

P.S. Lhikan is my favorite Toa. He's my BIONICLE equivilent to Sky-Byte. (minus the whole being an idiot thing):D

Has the TRU exclusive Makuta been released yet stateside? It looks friggin' sweet, IMO.

I need to get Lewa and Chirox, and then 5 of the matoran. This year in Bionicle is shaping up to be pretty awesome.

YES. It has been released here. At least I know it has. I've seen a bunch at my local TRU stores here in Rhode Island and Massachusettes.

From what I can tell, $25 for the set is not a bad deal.

    Yep.

And if you go to www.Brickset.com, you can see all the new 2008 Summer sets, including the updated TAKANUVA set!

^He's HUGE! (possibly bigger than Maxilos) and has awesome black & white parts, because now not only can he control light (like he originally could), but now he can also control shadow! He also has a MASSIVE 3-bladed staff and is overall pretty kick-ass looking. I can't wait for him to be released!

Yeah, so this year, there's three Shadow Matoran. I have Gavla, but personally, I want Radiak and his Makuta partner Antroz, because they have a combiner with them and Lewa Nuva and Tanma- into the most awesome Makuta Spiriah!

SERIOUSLY? DAMN SNOW!!! I thought the set is going to be released Feb. 15...

I like the black and lime-green. It makes the guy look like alien vs predator dealie.

???? I kind of care about masks...

If I remember correctly, his altered powers are because he was attacked by a shadow leech.

But yeah, He's frickin' MASSIVE. I wonder how his mask even attaches. It looks to be one of the biggest maks EVAR.

I love the masks, and I love the idea that they look similar, but still different. Oddly, the Toa just don't look right wearing Matoran masks and visa-versa.

2007 looks so great, it coulkd only be better if they did a Taipu redux.

    Really?

I don't know about you guys, but as far as new releases go in my state of Rhode Island...

I found Mutran & Vican the day after christmas at the Warwick Wal-Mart in Rhode Island Mall. I bought it.

    -and-

I found Makuta Icarax in mid-January at the Warwick ToysRus. I passed because they only had one and his box was crushed to shit.

We have a knack for getting new Bionicle sets in early, but anything else LEGO (System, Technic) seems to arrive on the time of the scheduled release date or a month after it. I remember when those LEGO Dinosaurs were released, it took a good 2 months for us to finally get them!:mad

Damn new names. I have no idea who you are talking about. Why can't they call red bat matuka or something?

My Zellers just got the Phantoka two days ago. I really want Radiak, he looks so mutated, he looks more like a Rahi than a Matoran. While Vamprah is my favorite Makuta, Radiak is my favorite Shadow Matoran.

I didn't use any new names in that post. "Taipu" and "Matoran" are old names. Taipu was a strong-man type matoran witth an adventurous spirit.

New characters deserve new names, I would think.

In truth, I had no idea what you were talking about when I quoted you.:p  I don't get what the "????" was for.

???? = confused smilie on other boards, so force of habit.

Matorans are village people. They are nice, 'cept a bit expensive for a good purchase.

The name thing was a joke. But the names do bother me, since I had no idea who you were talking about.

I am not well verse in the bionicle backstory (except the first chronicler game and various promos). I get the comics but sometimes the mail like to strip the comics...so I get an issue here or there without one...

^If you are talking about the LEGO Magazine, then do not fear, for not every issue they send you comes with the comic. The comics come once every two issues or so.

There's no such thing as "Matorans". There's "Matoran" or "Matoran's". Matoran is plural for Matoran.

    Sorry, had to.:p

For $8 I don't see what not to like about the new Matoran. They're huge compared to past sets. They've also got tons of useful articulation and all new peices excluding the weapons.

Woah! Those are...different. It will take better pictures for me to decide which ones I'd want, but they all look good so far. Although, what's up with Tahu's new mask? It's so different now. At least the new figures of the Toa (Lewa, Pohatu, Kopaka) resemble their past versions. These...eh maybe not so much.

Thanks for the new pictures Maximum Burn!

That's my only complaint; Tahu's mask. It's not a bad mask, it's just not a good Tahu mask. Doesn't fit the personality his last two masks had.
