When you think about it. The Rahkshi are basically Mecha Suits for the Khraata slugs, which has lead me to dub them “Super Mecha Mobile Slug Rahkshi”

I've noticed Bionicle is getting pricey and I think it's due to the fact that these sets are getting... old. I feel like every time I take one down I notice a crack. I think these sets are starting to reach their age limit, depending on how they were treated. Ironically sets that I've played with and disassembled seem to last longer than the ones I hardly touch.

It's strange. Is it just me?

Yeah I just picked up a couple Glatorian from a local Lego resale store for pretty excellent prices. Few broken pieces as I expected from that year, but while shopping in Bricklink for replacement parts I thought to see what others are going for since I only have now like 10% of the 2009 sets. And uh. Wow. I wish I had tried completing my collection much sooner.

Honestly I'm glad that I got the Bahrag and the Muaka and Kane-Ra sets when I did. They were both still pretty pricey-- the Bahrag in particular were a whopping $200-- but considering how much the price for Bionicle sets has gone up in the aftermarket since then, I think I made out pretty well. I'm lucky that the only other Rahi sets from 2001 that I still want are the cheaper ones, seeing as I already have the Tarakava from my childhood and no interest in the Manas if I'm being perfectly honest ( I definitely don't have the space for them anymore, they strike me more as a novelty in terms of function and I have no way of knowing if the electronics in them would still work after 20 years anyways.) Still, can't say I expect to find the Nui-Jaga and Nui-Rama for cheap...

Even the Nui-Rama have gone up?? I guess still sealed boxed ones yeah, but used doesn't seem too bad to me.

Meanwhile Manas are one of the biggest holes left I really want to fill so I know that's just never happening lol.

Bit of a random revival post but recently I've just been thinking ho unsatisfied with my Gali Mistika revamp I was. It was too far removed from the original in terms of colour and the mask, and reusing Hahli's mask never sat right. Two main Toa shouldn't be sharing the same mask mould, especially only a year apart. So I did what any self-respecting AFOL would do and took a somewhat rare and specific Lego piece and physically modified and painted it. :D

    upload_2022-12-15_15-46-21.png

the big thing I did was scale back the jawline and widen the eye. I don't have a problem with the mask's design fundamentally, but it gives off the entirely wrong character. It feels more like the mask you'd give a brute or even a bad guy, rather than the typically neutral "expressions" Toa masks tended to have.

And a (stupidly dark) pic of my Mistika revamps together:

    FLARE

Penultimate release, bad flash photography. And it only took me uhh... four months to get to another of these since the last review. After Spark being so plain, it's time for another really weird dude. Flare is the last in the pantheon of non-humanoid Slizers, and fills a unique niche. We got Electro the bug, and Judge with his VTOL jetpack. Flare rounds out the flying characters as something more distinctly avian, and it's a neat look.

    20221218_161545.jpg

I've complained a lot about too much black on some of the other figures, but I think it works well here and is on-theme. All four of the later Slizers make use of this then-new wing/hull/canopy/whatever piece, later seeing use on some of the Rahi sets, and it looks great here in orange. It's a more uncommon color, like purple, and would be easy to overdo, so I like that it's limited to a few central parts of the figure and some highlights. In a way, the color scheme is reminiscent of some birds, with orange talons and a "beak" and a few splashes of color against an otherwise more neutral-looking body. The tube pieces covering up the axles add a nice bit of mechanical detail as well, and I like the ski pieces for the "feet"- used in the exact same way as on Ski, but they seem different because of the new context of this figure.

    20221218_163429.jpg

Being one of the mutant Slizers, Flare was born from the remains of one of the "evil" characters that died when the meteor struck the planet. By process of elimination, he has to be the new form of Granite. This is the most contentious of the transformations, but one of the more interesting in my opinion. It's easy to dismiss Flare as another fire guy, following after Torch, but I've always seen him being more of a magma/molten rock themed character. This certainly fits a little better with Granite's shtick, and if you really want to stretch it, works with that "liquid plasma" stuff Granite used as his energy source. There are a few other carryover design elements, like the non-humanoid shaping, and the tail throwing arm, of course.

    20221218_162102.jpg

Flare kind of has a built-in transformation gimmick, simply rearranging his limbs and using the obligatory gear function to angle the head back and get him into flight mode. It's similar to Judge's feature, but I think it works a lot better here. I like Flare's dorky grounded mode, but this flying look is one of the best and most evocative designs from any of the Slizers. It's sleek, intimidating, and distinct, and there are definitely shades of Rahi in the look. Most of the orange being frontloaded, with the tail and legs trailing behind in black, is almost emblematic of the meteor that created him. I also really love how the entire tail spins around and around to use the gear function, it feels very "clockwork" and industrial, in line with the general aesthetic of the Slizers.

    20221218_163607.jpg

Speaking of the rotating tail, it is tough to hold it steady to use the disk throwing feature. On the whole, this aspect feels a lot less important to the second wave, in conjunction with the lack of new disk blind boxes, but at the same time, that didn't seem to correspond with any real increase in character design.

    20221218_163628.jpg

LOVE the face print. The gas mask look with fire welling up behind the goggles is inspired and adds a new dimension to the character. This could have just as easily been a more birdlike appearance, but the designers once again came up with something totally off the rails. Like Spark, this design mostly ditches the asymmetry of the first wave, barring the shape of the flames.

    20221218_161658.jpg

Disks; as we saw with Spark, these work together to tell a story. Notably, Flare's first disk comes before both of Spark's, and the second one follows-- showing the meteor arriving, crashing, Spark's birth, and then Flare's. There's also a whole legion of Flare-ish dudes in the background, lending further credence to the idea that there are more Slizers than just those depicted in the sets.

    20221218_163452.jpg

And the instructions. Like Spark's, I'm a big fan of this bleaker, apocalyptic look with the dark skies and destruction raining down. The buildings in the background here are fascinating, seemingly showing that Flare, too, is emerging from the ruins of the Rock sector to attack the infrastructure of the Slizer Dome. Very vibrant and imaginative stuff.

One more to go, then I might try out the combo models (or the official fan model...)

I do hope some day we get a Slizer relaunch. I know its the Bionicle thread, but, Slizers were my jam

Robo Riders is more of a take it or leave it though. I think I got more use out of them as Turbo's enemies than anything from its actual storyline...

I just think Lego needs to do something more with Technic than just make cars/vehicles. I return to form for Constraction as a Technic subtheme is something I desperately want to see.

I would love Technic-based action figure toys to return even if they’re not traditional Constraction.

I would like them to make a whole line of large technic/constraction figures, perhaps make them all mechs for smaller, more classic styled Bioncle/HF style figures, which would allow them to make the big expensive cool robots, but also have the cheaper ones for kids to buy for 10 or 20 bucks
