One of the few newspaper comics I still follow is Stephan Pastis' "Pearls Before Swine," an artistically simple but surprisingly morbid view of the world. Its usually good for a laugh when I need it.

Over the past week the comic's had a subplot about a new artist taking over, based off the suggestion that a second-grader could have better art skills than Pastis:

Now that the series has ended, Pastis revealed through a new interview that this "second-grader" is actually Bill Watterson of "Calvin and Hobbes." I never thought I'd see Watterson working on comics again in my lifetime, so this is a magnificent thrill.

Ah Waterson, after he left the Sunday comics were never the same. I've kept hoping he'd do a series of kids books or new Calvin and Hobbes that when straight to book form.

I loved seeing his art again. It'd be fun to see him do a new, lengthy project, whether it's a Calvin and Hobbes book or something else entirely.

This is not how I thought I'd see Waterson make his return.

Is Pearls done or just this storyline? Honestly this is one of the two comics I must read if I see a comics page in a newspaper (the other being Get Fuzzy)

This is pretty much the best thing to happen to comic strips, since the Garfield Halloween comics.

Well, Pastis just became my #2 favorite comic artist, after Watterson, of course. I give the man credit, he has a great sense of humor. Watterson came out of retirement for this? Bad. Ass.

This might just be the coolest newspaper comic of all time.

Glad to see Bill Watterson back.

I hope he actually does some new material in the near future.

I know he felt constrained by the newspaper format...I'd LOVE to see IDW get him to bring back Calvin and Hobbes in comic book form. They seem like the kind of company that would give him all the freedom he'd want :)  (Then they need to bring back Bloom County!)

    That's pretty cool!

Calvin and Hobbes was great. I still have two of the big collections around here somewhere - in my closet, I think. I should break 'em out.

Very nice to see Watterson back. Calvin and Hobbes was my favorite comic strip as a kid. I had all of the collections, too. Really wish Watterson would do more, maybe have Calvin as an adult where he passes Hobbes down to his own son who's a chip off the old block.

Seconded on both counts. I hadn't even scrolled down to The Reveal there, and I was thinking 'that looks familiar...'

I still have all my old Calvin & Hobbes books around somewhere...
