More than a year after signing Eddie Murphy for another go-round as the wisecracking Detroit detective who prefers getting his hands dirty in SoCal, Paramount is now eyeing a summer 2010 release date for the fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. Variety reports Brett Ratner, who added his frenetic touch to the Rush Hour trilogy and X-Men: The Last Stand, among others, is in talks to direct. Beverly Hills Cop III may have tanked 14 years ago and been a laugher for all the wrong reasons, but the first two action comedies were blockbuster hits, grossing $234.7 million and $153.6 million, respectively, in the U.S. The studio is hoping to get cameras rolling on the sequel next year, just as soon as they have a workable script. No writer has yet been assigned the grueling task of making a hopefully R-rated Axel funny again.
I guess they didnt learn they're lesson with BHC 3. Eddie Murphy hasn't done a good movie since.....I can't remember, Shrek maybe?
I want to know how much they are paying him for this. Given his career trajectory, this could qualify as a charitable act.
BHC3 was pretty awful, and Brett Ratner... well, not sure really. Rush Hour 1 and 2 were fun, Rush Hour 3 made me wonder what happened and how it got approved as a film.
I can't say that I'm surpirsed, but I figured this wouldn't have been greenlit for another ten or fifteen years.
Given that what roles Murphy has had lately have mostly been "profanity free and Disney friendly", I fear for the Axel Foley character.
Get another director, If it's closer to 1 and 2 fine. If it's anything like 3 it's a pass. I'll wait for reviews before I decide.
